Objectives: MR techniques have been reported as an alternative to conventional sialography. High-field systems (7 T) provide new contrasts coupled with increased signal-to-noise ratio, and hence higher spatial resolution. To our knowledge, no measurements of the parotid gland at 7 T have been reported. Therefore, our study aimed to optimize sequences for high-field MR imaging of the parotid gland and duct, as well as the facial nerve at 7 T and show the potential of high field imaging.

Materials And Methods: A 7 T whole-body scanner was used together with a 10-cm-diameter loop coil. Various GRE (MEDIC, DESS) and TSE (PD/T2, STIR) sequences were optimized and subsequently tested on 4 healthy volunteers and 4 patients. High-resolution images were compared with 1.5 T images both quantitatively (signal-to-noise ratio, contrast-to-noise) and qualitatively (visual rating of 2 independent readers).

Results: The high 0.6 mm isotropic resolution of the 3D DESS sequence was very useful for defining an oblique orientation with most of the duct being in-plane for subsequent imaging. With the MEDIC sequence, very fine branches of the duct were visible; furthermore, MEDIC yielded a very good depiction of lymph nodes. Severe specific absorption rate problems were observed with the STIR sequence at 7 T. Gland tissue in tumor patients can be well characterized with the PD/T2 TSE. Highest contrast-to-noise between duct and gland was achieved with the 7 T DESS. At 1.5 T, only the STIR sequence showed comparable quality to the overall superiority of the 7 T sequences. The facial nerve could only be depicted close to the skull base.

Conclusion: MR imaging at 7 T provides excellent image contrast and resolution of the parotid gland and duct. The proposed protocol offers a noninvasive examination within about 30 minutes.

Purpose: Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a widely used diagnostic procedure which facilitates the differentiation of salivary gland lesions. Although the performance of salivary gland FNAC (SG-FNAC) has improved since the introduction of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC), the range of the reported performance is still wide. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine lesion- and sampling-related factors that influence the success of SG-FNAC.

Background: Malignant salivary gland tumors (SGTs) present diagnostic challenges and limited treatment options. This study aims to determine the proportion of malignant SGTs overexpressing the androgen receptor (AR) by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and its association to age, sex, anatomical site, histopathological subtype and grade which may inform customized treatment approaches.

Methodology: This was a retrospective cross-sectional analytical study of archived paraffin embedded tissue blocks of malignant SGTs diagnosed at MNH Central Pathology Laboratory (CPL) from January 2019 to December 2022.

: A Warthin tumor is a benign salivary gland neoplasm, mostly found in the parotid gland. The number of reported Warthin tumors has increased over the years due to better diagnostic modalities and health system modernization. Warthin tumor rarely transforms into a malignant tumor; in this work, we present all cases reported in the English literature of different types of lymphomas within Warthin tumors.

Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are diverse lesions with varying morphological and clinical characteristics. Limited data exist on the distribution of SGTs in Saudi Arabia. We aimed to fill this gap by examining the distribution of SGTs across four tertiary hospitals in Riyadh.

Prognostic Implications of Occult Nodal Metastases in Patients with Clinically N0 Primary Parotid Gland Cancer.

Medicina (Kaunas)

November 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul 06591, Republic of Korea.

The role of occult nodal metastases in patients with parotid gland cancers remains unclear; such metastases are histologically diverse and exhibit unpredictable clinical courses. Here, we evaluated the prognostic utilities of such metastases, including metastases in the intraparenchymal lymph nodes (PARs). We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of patients who underwent surgery to treat clinically N0 primary parotid gland cancers from 2000 to 2022.
