A technique of detection of human papillomaviruses by in situ hybridization in paraffin-embedded formalin-fixed sections of genito-anal lesions is described. The probes are labeled by incorporation of digoxigenin-labeled nucleotides. The hybrids are revealed by immunohistochemistry with an anti-digoxigenin antibody coupled with alkaline phosphatase. This technique is sensitive, cheap and may be used in routine in laboratories of pathology.

Methods: We investigated the prevalence and prognostic significance of HPV infections based on p16 protein expression, HPV-DNA detection, and E6/E7 mRNA expression using immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction, and in situ hybridization, respectively.

Different types of feline papillomaviruses (PVs) are associated with a variety of skin lesions and neoplasia, such as papillomas and cell carcinomas, but the virus can also be found in healthy skin. In this review, the European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases (ABCD), a scientifically independent board of veterinary experts on feline infectious diseases from 11 European Countries, discusses the current knowledge of feline PV infections. Cats most likely become infected through lesions or abrasions of the skin.

Papillomaviruses (PVs) frequently infect humans as well as non-human species. While most PV infections are asymptomatic, PVs can also cause hyperplastic papillomas (warts) as well as pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions. In this review, the life cycle of PVs is discussed, along with the mechanisms by which PVs cause hyperplastic and neoplastic diseases.

Anal canal cancer (ACC) is a rare yet noteworthy malignancy that is strongly associated with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs). This case report highlights the diagnostic utility of endocytoscopy (EC) in distinguishing high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) from low-grade lesions (LSILs) in a 57-year-old male presenting with hematochezia. Traditional magnifying endoscopy was inconclusive; however, EC provided detailed visualization of cellular and vascular changes, facilitating a diagnosis of HPV-associated HSIL or carcinoma in situ.
