[Literary Meetings: the legacy of illustrated surgery].

Cir Esp

Centro de Historia de la Ciencia, UAB, Barcelona, España.

Published: January 2010

The Literary Meetings are a group of manuscripts which minuted regular meetings of the surgeons of the Royal College of Surgery (Real Colegio de Cirugía) of Barcelona during the "age of enlightment". Around 200 documents- or "minutes" (to which they had to add their respective criticisms or notes) are preserved. The earliest dates from 1765 and the last one is from 1835. The series of documents have time gaps which coincide with politically conflictive periods, which no doubt had an effect on the normal functioning of the College. In these meetings papers were presented on clinical questions and on the most flourishing basic sciences of the period, which was mainly chemistry. The documents, which have recently been completely transcribed and edited, represent an historic landmark in the exchange of experiences and continuous education of the Catalan surgeons.

My paper analyses Ali Smith's innovative use of queering as a narrative strategy in (2007) and (2008), focusing on her transformation of narrative structures, epistemic realities, and identity through intertextual engagement. Smith's fiction queers temporality and narrative agency by reimagining classical and literary texts, including Ovid's , John Lyly's , Shakespeare's plays, and . I suggest that in , Smith reinterprets Ovid's myth of Iphis and Ianthe to celebrate fluid and transformative identities, intertwining this with feminist activism and queer desire.

Despite decades of research and clinical insights on the importance of physical activity during pregnancy for maternal and infant health, over 75% of pregnant individuals do not meet general physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical each week. This may be due to several barriers that restrict engagement in physical activity during pregnancy. Without providing individualized facilitators to overcome these respective barriers, physical activity engagement during pregnancy may be severely limited and/or reduced.
