Dendritic signalling and homeostatic adaptation.

Published: June 2009

Homeostatic plasticity mechanisms are employed by neurons to alter membrane excitability and synaptic strength to adapt to changes in network activity. Recent studies suggest that homeostatic processes can occur not only on a global scale but also within specific neuronal subcompartments, involving a wide range of molecules and signalling pathways. Here, we review new findings into homeostatic adaptation within dendrites and discuss potential signalling components and mechanisms that may mediate this local form of regulation.

The integrated stress response (ISR) is a conserved eukaryotic signaling pathway that responds to diverse stress stimuli to restore proteostasis. The strength and speed of ISR activation must be tuned properly to allow protein synthesis while maintaining proteostasis. Here, we describe how genetic perturbations change the dynamics of the ISR in budding yeast.

While the genetic paradigm of cancer etiology has proven powerful, it remains incomplete as evidenced by the widening spectrum of non-cancer cell-autonomous "hallmarks" of cancer. Studies have demonstrated the commonplace presence of high oncogenic mutational burdens in homeostatically-stable epithelia. Hence, the presence of driver mutations alone does not result in cancer.

Homeostasis is essential in biological neural networks, optimizing information processing and experience-dependent learning by maintaining the balance of neuronal activity. However, conventional two-terminal memristors have limitations in implementing homeostatic functions due to the absence of global regulation ability. Here, three-terminal oxide memtransistor-based homeostatic synapses are demonstrated to perform highly linear synaptic weight update and enhanced accuracy in neuromorphic computing.

Reduced adult stem cell fate specification led to eye reduction in cave planarians.

Eye loss occurs convergently in numerous animal phyla as an adaptation to dark environments. We investigate the cave planarian Girardia multidiverticulata (Gm), a representative species of the Spiralian clade, to study mechanisms of eye loss. We found that Gm, which was previously described as an eyeless species, retains rudimentary and functional eyes.

Article Synopsis
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) results from impaired cochlear function and is influenced by genetics, noise exposure, medications, and aging.
  • The role of inflammation, oxidative stress, and processes like apoptosis in SNHL development is acknowledged, but the detailed mechanisms are still unclear.
  • Recent research highlights that endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and the associated cellular responses are significant in the onset and progression of SNHL, potentially offering new avenues for treatment.
