Vital signs such as heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) are essential physiological parameters that are routinely used to monitor human health and bodily functions. They can be continuously monitored through contact or contactless measurements performed in the home or a hospital. In this study, a contactless Doppler radar W-band sensing system was used for short-range, contactless vital sign estimation.

We propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, decision threshold dynamic optimization (DTDO) method based on Kalman filtering to mitigate the nonlinear effect impacts of the time-domain jitter and saturation distortion on a bit error rate (BER) performance. This dynamic optimization method was validated in a photonics-aided W-band millimeter-wave system. Compared to nonlinear algorithms and clustering classification methods, DTDO offers lower complexity and superior dynamic tracking capabilities when optimizing the BER performance in photonics-aided systems.

Article Synopsis
  • - F electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) is shown to be effective for measuring distances in biomolecules (0.7-2 nm) that traditional methods struggle with, using various spin labels.
  • - The study compares different spin labels, such as nitroxide, trityl radicals, Gd(III) chelates, and Cu(II) nitrilotriacetic acid chelates, using GB1 and ubiquitin proteins, revealing Gd(III) chelates yield the best signal-to-noise ratio.
  • - Findings indicate that the new trityl label, OXMA, has a long phase memory time but a longer tether limits its distance measurement capabilities; Gd(III) labels provide the most

Wireless data traffic is expected to exponentially increase in the future, and meeting this demand will require high data rate photonic-wireless links operating in the W-band (75-110 GHz). For this purpose, pulse-amplitude-modulation with four levels (PAM-4)-based intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) photonic-wireless systems are preferred due to their simplified configuration. In this Letter, we present an experimental demonstration of an IM-DD PAM-4 photonic-wireless link in the W-band, leveraging a monolithic dual-laser photonic chip to enhance integration.

Hybrid methylammonium (MA) lead halide perovskites have emerged as materials exhibiting excellent photovoltaic performance related to their rich structural and dynamic properties. Here, we use multifrequency (X-, Q-, and W-band) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of Mn impurities in MAPbCl to probe the structural and dynamic properties of both the organic and inorganic sublattices of this compound. The temperature dependent continuous-wave (CW) EPR experiments reveal a sudden change of the Mn spin Hamiltonian parameters at the phase transition to the ordered orthorhombic phase indicating its first-order character and significant slowing down of the MA cation reorientation.
