We compared 2 methods for determining Escherichia coli viability in vitro. A 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay detected bacteria irrespective of viability. A groEL mRNA reverse transcriptase PCR was positive for 72 h but later became negative. Detecting mRNA holds promise but is tedious, and groEL may not be the best target.

Background: Mycoplasmas are an important cause of respiratory diseases in tortoises. In snakes, evidence of mycoplasma infections has been found almost exclusively in pythons. To better understand the occurrence of these bacteria in other snake species, samples submitted for routine testing for respiratory pathogens were also tested for mycoplasma by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of amplicon-based real-time metagenomic sequencing applied to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for identifying the causative agents of bacterial meningitis. We conducted a 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing using a nanopore-based platform, alongside routine polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing or bacterial culture, to compare its clinical performance in pathogen detection on CSF samples. Among 17 patients, nanopore-based sequencing, multiplex PCR, and bacterial culture detected potential bacterial pathogens in 47.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) has emerged as a significant concern in Oman, affecting various animal species, including camels. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of BTV in camels and explore the associated risk factors within the northern region of Oman. Between October 2016 and March 2017, 439 serum samples and 100 blood samples were collected from camels in five governorates.

Various metabolic and cell signaling processes impact the functions of sugarcane plant cells. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical regulatory roles in enhancing yield and providing protection against various stressors. This study seeks to identify and partially characterize several novel miRNAs in sugarcane using tools, while also offering a preliminary assessment of their functions.

We aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of screening for sexually transmitted infections (STI), Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis in patients with suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) but negative urine cultures, using a pooled sampling method. A cohort of 200 patients was analyzed. A decision tree model based on cost-effectiveness was used to evaluate the following five diagnostic strategies: (A) no screening;(B) screening only men;(C) screening only women;(D) screening men and women with high leukocyte counts (>70cells/µL);(E) screening all men and women.
