BMC Musculoskelet Disord
September 2023
Department of Healthcare of Older People, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Nottingham, NG72UH, UK.
Background: Bisphosphonate medications, including alendronate, ibandronate and risedronate administered orally and zoledronate, administered intravenously, are commonly prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis based on evidence that, correctly taken, bisphosphonates can improve bone strength and lead to a reduction in the risk of fragility fractures. However, it is currently unclear how decisions to select between bisphosphonate regimens, including intravenous regimen, are made in practice and how clinicians support patients with different treatments.
Methods: This was an interpretivist qualitative study.
BMC Prim Care
April 2023
Department of Medical Oncology, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Background: Several preventive medications and supplements become inappropriate in the last phase of life due to increased risk of adverse events caused by changed pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions, and changed care goals. Information on these preventive medication and supplements use in patients with a life-limiting illness in the home-care setting is limited. The primary aim of this study was to assess the use of four different groups of preventive drugs and supplements, which are inappropriate in adult patients with a life-limiting illness, living at home in the last year of life.

Department of Oncology and Metabolism University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK; Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield, UK. Electronic address:
Purpose: In Sheffield (UK), we introduced the PINP monitoring algorithm for the management of osteoporosis treatment delivered in primary care. Our aims were to evaluate whether this algorithm was associated with better osteoporosis outcomes and was cost-effective compared to standard care.
Methods: Inclusion criteria were referral from Sheffield GPs, BMD scans performed between 2012 and 2013 and a report advising initiation of oral bisphosphonate and PINP monitoring.
Aim: Osteoporosis is a major risk factor for fractures. Poor persistence with osteoporosis medication hampers outcomes. This study assessed whether encouraging the formation of patient-led follow-up cooperatives between general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists improved medication persistence.

Introduction: High social cost and high risk of disability make postmenopausal osteoporosis one of major public health problem in the 21 century. The aim of this study was to assess frequency of undiagnosed and untreated osteoporosis in postmenopausal women in the Upper Silesia Region of Poland. Additionally, we compare estimation of the 10-year probability of major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) and hip fractures (HF) based on fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) with and without bone mineral density (BMD).
