This paper describes techniques used to determine airflow rate in multiple emission point applications typical of animal housing. An accurate measurement of building airflow rate is critical to accurate emission rate estimates. Animal housing facilities rely almost exclusively on ventilation to control inside climate at desired conditions. This strategy results in building airflow rates that range from about three fresh-air changes per hour in cold weather to more than 100 fresh-air changes per hour in hot weather. Airflow rate measurement techniques used in a comprehensive six-state study could be classified in three general categories: fan indication methods, fan rotational methods, and airspeed measurement methods. Each technique is discussed and implementation plans are noted. A detailed error analysis is included that estimated the uncertainty in airflow rate between +/-5 and +/-6.1% of reading at a building operating static pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure of 20 Pa, 25 degrees C, 50%, and 97,700 Pa, respectively.

Characterizing olfactory brain responses in young infants.

Odor perception plays a critical role in early human development, but the underlying neural mechanisms are not fully understood. To investigate these, we presented appetitive and aversive odors to infants of both sexes at one month of age while recording functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and nasal airflow data. Infants slept during odor presentation to allow MRI scanning.

Numerical Simulation of Airflow Organization in Vulcanization Tanks for Waste Tires.

Currently, in the domestic practice of retreading tires using vulcanization tanks, some tanks exhibit uneven temperature distributions leading to low retreading success rates. To address that, this paper simulated the temperature and velocity fields during the heating process of vulcanization tanks for waste tire retreading. The results indicated that a higher heating power reduces the time required for the vulcanizing agent to reach the vulcanization condition, but it also increases the difference in tire temperature in the tank, with a severely uneven distribution of the temperature field.

Peripheral blood miRNAs are associated with airflow below threshold in children with asthma.

Channing Division of Network Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial post-transcriptional regulators involved in inflammatory diseases, such as asthma. Poor lung function and airflow issues in childhood are linked to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adulthood.

Methods: We analyzed small RNA-Seq data from 365 peripheral whole blood samples from the Genetics of Asthma in Costa Rica Study (GACRS) for association with airflow levels measured by FEV1/FVC.

Electronic address:

The toxicity of electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol is influenced not only by the type of e-liquid but also by various operational parameters of the device used to vaporize it. In this study, we utilized a flask and heating mantle system, instead of a conventional EC device, to systematically evaluate the effects of EC device operational parameters, including vaporization temperature, airflow rate, and the materials of coils and wicks, on the generated mass of EC aerosol and the production of toxic carbonyl compounds. The results demonstrated that these parameters significantly impact aerosol mass and toxicant composition.

Limited by the adsorption and diffusion rate of water molecules, traditional humidity sensors, such as those based on polymer electrolytes, porous ceramics, and metal oxides, typically have long response times, which hinder their application in monitoring transient humidity changes. Here we present an ultrafast humidity sensor with a millisecond-level response. The sensor is prepared by assembling monolayer graphene oxide quantum dots on silica microspheres using a simple electrostatic self-assembly technique.
