The traditional apprenticeship model of "see one, do one, teach one" is no longer considered the most effective approach for training surgical trainees. Key factors such as patient safety, increasing trainee numbers, and clinician workload pose significant challenges to surgical training. These pressures have led to the adoption of simulation-based education as an effective adjunct to clinical experience when training future surgeons.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hemorrhage is the main cause of preventable death in trauma situations, leading to military and civilian advancements in medical practices, particularly through the use of tourniquets to manage extremity bleeding and save lives.
  • - While tourniquets have significantly decreased deaths from bleeding in military settings, noncompressible hemorrhage still poses a major risk, especially before patients receive definitive medical care.
  • - The study explores using a small, disposable pressure monitor during resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to enhance blood pressure monitoring, facilitate better resuscitation practices, and reduce the need for blood products in extreme environments.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) simulation technology was rapidly integrated into pre-registration adult nursing programmes in response to the pandemic and a reduction in clinical placements. The UK's regulatory body for nursing has recognised its value in nursing education by increasing the possible number of simulated practice hours that can replace clinical placements to 600 hours. This article reports on an evaluation study of a novel approach using screen-based VR simulations for groups of students in a classroom setting.

Article Synopsis
  • * Our study identifies five key challenges in prompt evaluation and proposes a feature-oriented workflow, focusing on summary characteristics like complexity and naturalness rather than traditional metrics like ROUGE.
  • * We introduce Awesum, a visual analytics system that helps users refine summarization prompts and found that it simplifies systematic evaluation for non-technical users; the workflow could also apply to other natural language generation tasks.

Purpose: Simulation-based education in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia (UGRA) improves knowledge, skills, and patient outcomes. Nevertheless, it is not known how simulation-based UGRA education is used across Canada. We aimed to characterize the current use of simulation-based UGRA education in Canadian anesthesiology residency training programs.
