Objective: To investigate the expression differences of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) and caspase-3 among colorectal carcinoma, adenoma and normal mucosa, and to identify the relationship between AIF and caspase-3 expression in colorectal adenoma-carcinoma sequence.

Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin embedded colorectal tissues from 174 cases, including 84 adenomas, 72 carcinomas, and 18 normal mucosa, were examined for expression of AIF and caspase-3 by streptavidin-peroxidase (SP) immunohistochemistry.

Results: The positive rates of AIF and caspase-3 in colorectal adenoma were higher than those in normal mucosa (P <0.05). The positive rate of AIF in adenoma showed no significant difference compared to colorectal carcinoma (P >0.05). However, caspase-3 expression in adenomas was significantly higher than that in carcinoma (P <0.05). The positive rate of AIF in tubular adenoma was significantly higher than that in villous adenoma (P <0.05), while the positive expression rate of caspase-3 in the two types of adenoma showed no significant difference (P >0.05). AIF expression had no prominent correlation with the caspase-3 expression (P >0.05).

Conclusions: The dysregulation of caspase-independent pathway of apoptosis may be an early event in the development of colorectal carcinogenesis, while the dysregulation of the caspase-dependent pathway of apoptosis may be one of contributing factors of colorectal carcinogenesis. The caspase-independent pathway of apoptosis and the caspase-dependent pathway of apoptosis are two relatively independent pathways in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Background/objectives: Early postmortem mitochondrial function and apoptotic activation affect meat quality development. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) supplementation to pigs prior to harvest can improve pork color stability, but its mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of NR supplementation on early postmortem mitochondrial functionality and apoptosis.

Objective: The study aims to investigate the long-term impacts of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis in pediatric and adult mice, specifically focusing on how age-at-injury influences these processes.

Methods: Controlled cortical impact (CCI) was used to induce TBI in pediatric (21-25 days old) and adult (8-12 weeks old) C57Bl/6 male mice. Neuroinflammation was evaluated through immunoreactivity for Iba-1 and GFAP, while apoptosis was assessed using markers such as Bax, Bcl- 2, and pro-caspase-3.

Background: Chalcones have been described in the literature as promising antineoplastic compounds.

Objectives: Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the cytotoxic effect of 23 synthetic chalcones on human acute leukemia (AL) cell lines (Jurkat and K562).

Methods: Cytotoxicity assessment was performed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method.

1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester (DINCH) is a non-phthalate plasticizer used as a replacement of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in daily usage items. It is not known whether continuous exposure to low doses of DINCH can lead to hepatic alterations, the liver being the organ responsible for its metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activation of inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in the liver of lactating dams after DINCH exposure, and whether these effects may be observed on postnatal day 6 (PND6) offspring.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a Fusarium mycotoxin, causes spleen apoptosis and inflammation, which damage the organ. Curcumin (Cur) is a member of the ginger family. It has anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects that maintain the health of the organism's immune system.
