The written works and the works of art testify the goitres existed over thousands of years. However for a long time they were confused with scrofula and several cervical tumours. In fact the thyroid gland was only discovered and described at Renaissance and its role was known at the end of the XIXth century. The treatment of goitre remained vague even though as soon as the ancient times seaweed and sponge ashes were prescribed, that was premonitory therapeutic approach. As for the surgical treatment, it appeared only one century ago and it is noticeable that the first surgeons who operated goitres played a significant role in the understanding of the thyroid physiology.

Background: This study investigates the therapeutic versus side effects of intranasal lithium chloride (LiCl) in Ryanodex formulation vehicle (RFV) to inhibit inflammation and pyroptosis and to ameliorate on cognitive dysfunction and depressive behavior in 5XFAD mice.

Method: 5XFAD and wild type (WT) B6SJLF1/J mice were treated with intranasal or oral LiCl (3 mM/kg) dissolved in RFV starting at 2 or 9 months old and the continuous treatment lasted for 12 weeks. Behavior was examined for depression, cognition, olfaction, and motor function at the ages of 5 or 12 months.

Dual oxidases (DUOX) are enzymes that have the main function in producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in various tissues. DUOX also play an important role in the synthesis of HO, which is essential for the production of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones can influence the process of muscle development through direct stimulation of ROS, 5' AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and mTOR and indirect effect autophagy and the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) pathway.

Dynamic carotid compression arising from a change in patient position is a rare complication of goitre, with the potential for cerebral ischaemia and infarction. In this report, a 37-year-old woman presented with a multi-nodular goitre with clinical features concerning for transient cerebral ischaemia. The anaesthetic management and neurological monitoring used to mitigate the risk of cerebral ischaemia during thyroidectomy is described and the literature surrounding this rare complication is explored.
