A doubly interpenetrated square-grid coordination polymer {[Cd(ImBNN)(2)(CF(3)SO(3))(2)])guest}(n) (1) (guest = C(7)H(8) and ImBNN = 2,5-bis[4'-(imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene) that contains cavities able to accommodate toluene guest molecules has been assembled by the reaction of the Schiff base ligand ImBNN and Cd(CF(3)SO(3))(2). The framework 1 shows dynamism in either temperature-dependent expansion and shrinkage or cooperatively temperature-dependent guest-driven ligand exchange at the metal center. Studies of guest removal/uptake by heating in a vacuum, cooling in air, and then heating in toluene at reflux have revealed a series of single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformations: complex 1 lost toluene guests and captured water molecules to give guest-free 1 b via a proposed metastable phase 1 a, and 1 b could readsorb toluene guests to give 1', which represents a restored 1. These structural changes establish an indirect recoverable process that involves ligand exchange in the coordination sphere and guest exchange in the cavity accompanied by the cleavage/formation of Cd-O bonds and CF(3)SO(3)(-) anion-shifting. In contrast, direct heating of 1 in the absence of a vacuum resulted in thermostable 1 c, confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction as a new phase that could not be converted back into 1 and that had lost the ability of readsorbing toluene guests.

MHC-I proteins present epitopic peptides to CD8+ T cells to elicit multifaceted adaptive immune responses. The affinity and avidity of interactions between peptide-MHC molecules and T-cell receptors (TCR) are fundamental parameters that contribute to the induction of activated or anergic T cell states. Here, we present a loadable system, VLP-Open HLA, featuring a virus-like particle (VLP) that can accommodate up to 60 loadable HLA (HLA - human leukocyte antigen) molecules.

Selective extraction of lithium over alkali and alkaline earth ions by synergistic solvent extraction.

Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from natural surface and geothermal brines is very challenging due to the low ratio of lithium to other metals, and the lack of suitable materials that bind lithium with sufficiently high selectivity. In this paper, a synergistic solvent extraction system is described that comprises a liquid ion exchanger (saponified bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithiophosphoric acid) and a lithium-selective ligand (2,9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline) in an aliphatic diluent. The extraction mechanism was investigated and was confirmed to involve the binding of lithium to the selective ligand, while the liquid ion exchanger facilitates the transfer of metal ions from the aqueous to the organic phase.

Polysilicate-ferric-calcium-lanthanum (PSFCL) was synthesized through a co-polymerization method in order to treat the yellow phosphorus wastewater. Its morphology, composition and functional group were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The optimization of the flocculant was also investigated, including La/Si molar ratio, pH, agitation time, dosage and sedimentation time.

Dual-Phase Ligand Engineering Enables 18.21% FAPbI Quantum Dot Solar Cells.

Formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI) perovskite quantum dot (PQD) are promising candidate for high-performing quantum dot photovoltaic due to its narrow bandgap, high ambient stability, and long carrier lifetime. However, the carrier transport blockage and nonradiative recombination loss, originating from the high-dielectric ligands and defects/trap states on the FAPbI PQD surface, significantly limit the efficiency and stability of its photovoltaic performance. In this work, through exploring dual-site molecular ligands, namely 2-thiophenemethylammonium iodide (2-TM) and 2-thiopheneethylammonium iodide (2-TE), a dual-phase synergistic ligand exchange (DSLE) protocol consisting of both solution-phase and solid-state ligand engineering is demonstrated.

Mass Spectrometry-Based Protein Footprinting for Protein Structure Characterization.

Acc Chem Res

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri 63130, United States.

ConspectusProtein higher-order structure (HOS) is key to biological function because the mechanisms of protein machinery are encoded in protein three-dimensional structures. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based protein footprinting is advancing protein structure characterization by mapping solvent-accessible regions of proteins and changes in H-bonding, thereby providing higher order structural information. Footprinting provides insights into protein dynamics, conformational changes, and interactions, and when conducted in a differential way, can readily reveal those regions that undergo conformational change in response to perturbations such as ligand binding, mutation, thermal stress, or aggregation.
