Article Synopsis
  • Osteochondrosis (OC) is a significant developmental orthopedic disease in sport horse breeds, and this study examined its occurrence in 3,048 Pura Raza Española (PRE) horses using digital radiographs, specifically targeting the hock area.
  • The incidence rate of hock OC was found to be 13.3%, with the Distal Intermediate Ridge of the Tibia exhibiting the highest incidence (10.0%) and the medial trochlear ridges of the talus showing the lowest (0.2%).
  • Genetic assessments indicated a strong heritability of OC, particularly in relation to specific traits, with the binomial threshold model predicting an estimated heritability of 0.71, highlighting the potential for selective

Article Synopsis
  • Tarsocrural osteochondrosis (OCD) is a common developmental disease in young Standardbred horses, leading to joint swelling without lameness, and varies in fragment size and location.* -
  • Researchers collected data from 79 horses to examine how the location and characteristics of osteochondral fragments affect joint swelling and relate to markers of cartilage damage and inflammation.* -
  • Results showed that unstable fragments located at the medial malleolus caused the most joint swelling, and higher levels of specific markers indicated inflammation and cartilage degradation were present in OCD cases.*

The objective of this study was to report long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes following arthroscopic reparative treatment - flap removal, curettage, and osteostixis of subchondral bone - in dogs with humeral trochlea osteochondritis dissecans (OCD). Dogs were included in this retrospective multicenter case series if they had a computed tomography diagnostic of humeral trochlear OCD, with or without medial coronoid disease, that was treated by arthroscopic reparative technique, and a detailed follow-up at least 6 mo postoperatively. The latter included a clinical examination, assessment of lameness, measurement of the brachial circumference and elbow amplitude, International Elbow Working Group (IEWG) radiographic score, owner-completed canine brief pain inventory (CBPI) score, and visual analogue scale (VAS) rating.

Osteochondrosis (osteochondritis dissecans), OC(D), is an important joint disorder that has been studied through the years in different breeds but, to our knowledge, there are no reports of its prevalence in Lusitano horses. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of OC(D) in Lusitanos, define the characteristics of the disorder in this breed and compare with Spanish Purebred horses. This is a retrospective study that analysed the radiographs from the metacarpometatarsophalangeal, tarsocrural and femoropatellar joints that were taken in 302 Lusitano horses (1-12 years; obtained from 2007 until 2019).

Objective: To determine the influence of clinical osteochondrosis (OC) on the short-term (2, 3, and 4-year-old) and long-term racing performance and longevity of standardbred racehorses.

Study Design: Retrospective case-control study.

Sample Population: Standardbred racehorses from a single breeding farm born between 2009 and 2017 that survived to racing age (n = 2711).
