The distribution of a solubilizate between micelles and the aqueous phase does not obey a simple partition law when a second solubilizate species is present. Alterations of the apparent partition coefficient cannot be explained in terms of a simple displacement mechanism, following the interaction of both solubilizates with the same site of the micelle. A non linear increase in solubilizate association to micelles following an increase in surfactant concentration is observed in the presence of a second solubilizate. A depression in the cloud point temperature follows the addition of a second species and is such that cannot be interpreted as a simple additive effect. Alteration of the apparent partition coefficient in a miscellar solution has an effect on the permeation rate of the solubilizate across an artificial membrane. Biopharmaceutical implications are discussed.

For the first time, the developmental events in the course of exine structure establishment have been traced in detail with TEM in Eupomatia, with the addition of cytochemical tests. A new look at unfolding events is suggested using our recent hypothesis on self-assembling micellar mesophases. The process proved to be unusual and includes "ghost" stages.

Water solubility enhancements of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), viz., naphthalene, anthracene and pyrene, by micellar solutions at 25 degrees C using two series of surfactants, each involving two cationic and one nonionic surfactant in their single as well as equimolar binary and ternary mixed states, were measured and compared. The first series was composed of three surfactants, benzylhexadecyldimethylammonium chloride (C16BzCl), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16Br), and polyoxyethylene(20)mono-n-hexadecyl ether (Brij-58) with a 16-carbon (C16) hydrophobic chain; the second series consisted of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12Br), dodecylethyldimethylammonium bromide (C12EBr), and polyoxyethylene(4)mono-n-dodecyl ether (Brij-30) with a 12-carbon (C12) chain.

This article summarizes the studies on the degradation of the thermodynamically unstable o/w (nano)emulsion--a dispersion of one liquid in another, where each liquid is immiscible, or poorly miscible in the other. Emulsions are unstable exhibiting flocculation, coalescence, creaming and degradation. The physical degradation of emulsions is due to the spontaneous trend toward a minimal interfacial area between the dispersed phase and the dispersion medium.

A photoaffinity ligand for the head-activator (HA) receptor from hydra was synthesized using solid-phase peptide synthesis and coupling of two HA peptides over their epsilon-amino groups of Lys7 with succinimidyl esters. The new ligand, Bpa-HA-HA bipeptide, contains one normal HA peptide and another where p-benzoylphenylalanine (Bpa) was added at the amino terminus to allow ultraviolet activation and Tyr11 instead of Phe11 for radioiodination. The 125I-Bpa-HA-HA bipeptide bound with nanomolar affinity to the HA receptor from the multiheaded mutant of Chlorohydra viridissima as measured in a filter assay.
