Subsurface seismic velocity structure is essential for earthquake source studies, including hypocenter determination. Conventional hypocenter determination methods ignore the inherent uncertainty in seismic velocity structure models, and the impact of this oversight has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we address this issue by employing a physics-informed deep learning (PIDL) approach that quantifies uncertainty in two-dimensional seismic velocity structure modeling and its propagation to hypocenter determination by introducing neural network ensembles trained on active seismic survey data, earthquake observation data, and the physical equation of wavefront movement.

Volcanic provinces are among the most active but least well understood landscapes on Earth. Here, we show that the central Cascade arc, USA, exhibits systematic spatial covariation of topography and hydrology that are linked to aging volcanic bedrock, suggesting systematic controls on landscape evolution. At the Cascade crest, a locus of Quaternary volcanism, water circulates deeply through the upper [Formula: see text]1 km of crust but transitions to shallow and dominantly horizontal flow as rocks age away from the arc front.

Plants will form the basis of artificial ecosystems in space exploration and the creation of bases on other planets. Astrophysical factors, such as ionizing radiation (IR), magnetic fields (MF) and gravity, can significantly affect the growth and development of plants beyond Earth. However, to date, the ways in which these factors influence plants remain largely unexplored.

We analyze the relationship between geothermal energy production and seismic hazards in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field (SSGF) between 1972 and 2022. A clear increase in seismic activity accompanies geothermal energy production and is greatest to the east of the Brawley fault, where the amount of injection exceeds the amount of production. We estimate that, whereas there was a 2% chance of a M6.
