Estimator for reflective delay line-type SAW sensors.

IEEE Trans Ultrason Ferroelectr Freq Control

Published: June 2009

This correspondence presents an estimator for reflective delay line-type surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors. The estimator is derived from an analytical model and its range of validity is discussed. The proposed estimator enables simultaneous access to several SAW sensors with time-orthogonal responses and it can be implemented in a computationally efficient way utilizing the fast Fourier transform algorithm. The estimator is experimentally verified and its performance is compared with that of a reference estimator.

The shifting of buffer crop repertoires in pre-industrial north-eastern Europe.

Sci Rep

Department of Archaeology, Faculty of History, Vilnius University, Universiteto St. 7, Vilnius, 01513, Lithuania.

This study explores how major climatic shifts, together with socioeconomic factors over the past two millennia, influenced buffer crop selection, focusing on five crops: rye, millet, buckwheat, oat, and hemp. For this study, we analyzed archaeobotanical data from 135 archaeological contexts and historical data from 242 manor inventories across the northeastern Baltic region, spanning the period from 100 to 1800 AD. Our findings revealed that rye remained a main staple crop throughout the studied periods reflecting environmental adaptation to northern latitudes.

Background: Fatigue is a common symptom in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Published studies of fatigue among patients with COPD have presented diverse findings that may reflect variations in research methods as well as actual population differences.

Objective: To estimate the worldwide prevalence of fatigue in patients with COPD and its associated epidemiological characteristics.

Animals and humans possess an adaptive ability to rapidly estimate approximate numerosity, yet the visual mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood. Evidence suggests that approximate numerosity relies on segmented perceptual units modulated by grouping cues, with perceived numerosity decreasing when objects are connected by irrelevant lines, independent of low-level features. However, most studies have focused on physical objects.

The assessment of humans indirectly exposed to chemicals via the environment (HvE) is an assessment element of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. The European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) is the default screening tool, aimed at prioritizing chemicals for further refinement/higher tier assessment. This review summarizes the approach used in EUSES, evaluates the state of the science in human exposure modeling via the environment, and identifies areas for further research to strengthen the confidence and applicability of EUSES for assessing HvE.
