Fully unsubstituted 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) 1 was prepared. Reaction of 8-thiomethylbodipy 2 with triethylsilane in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd and a stoichiometric amount of copper(I) thienyl-2-carboxylate (CuTC) in THF at 55 degrees C gave compound 1 in nearly quantitative yield. This compound displays high quantum yields (up to 93%) in polar solvents including water. Its optical properties and crystal structure are discussed.

Background: Light exposure regulates the human circadian system and more widely affects health, well-being, and performance. With the rise in field studies on light exposure's effects, the amount of data collected through wearable loggers and dosimeters has also grown. These data are more complex than stationary laboratory measurements.

We recently converted the GAF domain of NpR3784 cyanobacteriochrome into near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent proteins (FPs). Unlike cyanobacterichrome, which incorporates phycocyanobilin tetrapyrrole, engineered NIR FPs bind biliverdin abundant in mammalian cells, thus being the smallest scaffold for it. Here, we determined the crystal structure of the brightest blue-shifted protein of the series, miRFP670nano3, at 1.

To screen a high-producing recombinant Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell from transfected cells is generally laborious and time-consuming. We developed an efficient enrichment strategy for high-producing cell screening using flow cytometry (FCM). A stable pool that had possibly shown a huge variety of monoclonal antibody (mAb) expression levels was prepared by transfection of an expression vector for mAb production to a CHO cell.

Using electrochemical charge injection, the fluorescence lifetimes of negatively charged core/shell CdTe/CdSe QDs are measured as a function of core size and shell thickness. It is found that the ensemble negative trion lifetimes reach a maximum (∼4.5 ns) for an intermediate shell thickness.
