In a 34 year-old woman complaining of right upper quadrant pain and having mildly elevated total bilirubin, the imaging investigation revealed a liver lesion with characteristics of focal nodular hyperplasia, measuring 3.8 cm, at the confluence of the hepatic veins. The mass was obstructing the left and middle hepatic veins and nearly obstructing the right hepatic vein. Dilation of the splenic vein with development of retropancreatic varices, splenomegaly and free abdominal fluid were also present. The patient underwent an uncomplicated left hemihepatectomy. Patients postoperative total bilirubin was normalized. Tomographic imaging three months after the liver resection revealed resolution of all the Budd-Chiari radiographic signs. This is a report of a case where a hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia, despite its benign nature, required extensive and urgent surgical intervention due to its location and potential dangers secondary to the development of portal hypertension.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan in India. VL can be complicated by post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a macular or nodular rash that develops in 10%-20% of patients after treatment of VL in India. Patients with PKDL are infectious to sand flies, promoting further transmission of the parasite.

The prevalence of goiter, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancers in the pediatric population has increased. In some rare cases, local conditions such as juvenile desmoid-type fibromatosis (JDTF) can mimic specific thyroid pathology, complicating the diagnostic process. A 17-year-old obese adolescent girl was admitted to the Endocrinology Department with progressive swelling on the left side of the neck, persisting for approximately one year, recently accompanied by dysphonia and inspiratory dyspnea, and ultimately diagnosed as a unilateral nodular goiter associated with compressive phenomena.

Background: The differential diagnosis between benign and malignant thyroid nodules continues to be a major challenge in clinical practice. The rising incidence of thyroid neoplasm and the low incidence of aggressive thyroid carcinoma, urges the exploration of strategies to improve the diagnostic accuracy in a pre-surgical phase, particularly for indeterminate nodules, and to prevent unnecessary surgeries. Only in 2022, the 5th WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors, and in 2023, the 3rd Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and the European Thyroid Association included biomarkers in their guidelines.
