Trichloroethylene is a toxic and recalcitrant groundwater pollutant. Palladium nanoparticles bio-precipitated on Shewanella oneidensis were encapsulated in polyurethane, polyacrylamide, alginate, silica or coated on zeolites. The reactivity of these bio-Pd beads and zeolites was tested in batch experiments and trichloroethylene dechlorination followed first order reaction kinetics. The calculated k-values of the encapsulated catalysts were a factor of six lower compared to non-encapsulated bio-Pd. Bio-Pd, used as a catalyst, was able to dechlorinate 100 mgL(-1) trichloroethylene within a time period of 1h. The main reaction product was ethane; yet small levels of chlorinated intermediates were detected. Subsequently polyurethane cubes empowered with bio-Pd were implemented in a fixed bed reactor for the treatment of water containing trichloroethylene. The influent recycle configuration resulted in a cumulative removal of 98% after 22 h. The same reactor in a flow through configuration achieved removal rates up to 1059 mg trichloroethylene g Pd(-1)d(-1). This work showed that fixed bed reactors with bio-Pd polyurethane cubes can be instrumental for remediation of water contaminated with trichloroethylene.

Purpose: Poor sleep is increasing worldwide but sleep studies, using objective measures, are limited in Africa. Thus, we described the actigraphy-measured sleep characteristics of Nigerian in-school adolescents and the differences in these sleep characteristics in rural versus urban-dwelling adolescents using actigraphy plus a sleep diary.
Methods: This comparative, quantitative study involved 170 adolescents aged 13-19 attending six rural and six urban schools in southwestern Nigeria.

In this study, the mechanisms of SO adsorption on lignite char and char-supported Fe-Zn-Cu sorbent (FZC sorbent) were investigated. The FZC sorbent was prepared by the impregnation of metal components on raw coal followed by steam gasification. Flue gas desulfurization experiments were carried out on a fixed-bed reactor at 100-300 °C by using simulated flue gas containing SO/O/HO balanced by N.

This study investigates the process of planning for future inpatient resources (beds, staff and costs) for maternity (pregnancy and childbirth) services. The process of planning is approached from a patient-centered philosophy; hence, how do we discharge a suitably rested healthy mother who is fully capable of caring for the newborn baby back into the community? This demonstrates some of the difficulties in predicting future births and investigates trends in the average length of stay. While it is relatively easy to document longer-term (past) trends in births and the conditions relating to pregnancy and birth, it is exceedingly difficult to predict the future nature of such trends.

Greywater, originating from kitchen sinks and toilets, constitutes 75-80 % of the domestic wastewater produced in homes and can be reclaimed for non-potable uses. This study synthesized novel sludge-derived aluminosilicates and alginate-polyethyleneimine (PEI) biochar composites. The aluminosilicates offer a sustainable approach to sludge management, while alginate-polyethyleneimine presents a green biochar modification approach.

Pesticide contamination in wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge, driven by extensive agricultural use. This study evaluates the removal of chlorpyrifos (CPS) using sugarcane bagasse-based biochar alginate beads in a continuous fixed-bed adsorption column, achieving a remarkable 95-98% removal efficiency. Compared to conventional adsorbents like activated carbon, which typically show CPS adsorption capacities ranging from 50-70 mg g⁻ under similar conditions, the biochar alginate beads demonstrate better performance with a sorption capacity of 91.
