We report on a simple anisotropic magneto-optical trap for neutral atoms that produces a large sample of cold atoms confined in a cylindrically-shaped volume with a high aspect ratio (100:1). Due to the large number of trapped atoms, the laser beams that propagate along the optically thick axis of the trap to cool the atoms are substantially attenuated. We demonstrate that the resulting intensity imbalance produces a net force that spatially localizes the atoms. This limits both the trap length and the total number of trapped atoms. Rotating the cooling beams by a small angle relative to the trap axis avoids the problem of attenuation, and atoms can be trapped throughout the entire available trapping volume. Numerical and experimental results are reported that demonstrate the effects of absorption in an anisotropic trap, and a steady-state, line-center optical path length of 55 is measured for a probe beam propagating along the length of the trap.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnets, as an important member of the 2D material family, have emerged as a promising platform for spintronic devices. Herein, we report the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of highly crystalline submillimeter-scale self-intercalated metallic 2D ferromagnetic (FM) trigonal chromium telluride (CrTe) flakes on inert mica substrates. Through magneto-optical and magnetotransport measurements, we unveil the exceptional magnetic properties of these 2D flakes.

This study investigates the magneto-optical response of liquid crystals (LCs) with planar anchoring in the presence of γ-FeO magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). This research demonstrates the formation of novel magnetic composite chains of LCs wrapped around γ-FeO MNP chains within the LC matrix under an applied magnetic field. These composite chains exhibit a distinct magneto-optical response, characterized by changes in birefringence and dichroism as the magnetic field direction is altered.

The highly structured design of metasurfaces greatly facilitates the manipulation of near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT). In this study, we incorporate magneto-optical materials into metasurfaces to theoretically explore the mechanism for controlling NFRHT between anisotropic magneto-optical metasurfaces. Our findings indicate that the interaction between the magnetization-induced modes, arising from interband transitions of graphene, and the surface modes of InSb under a magnetic field leads to a transition in the heat transfer spectrum from a dual band to a triple band.

Recently, there has been significant interest in topological nodal-line semimetals due to their linear energy dispersion with one-dimensional nodal lines or loops. These materials exhibit fascinating physical properties, such as drumhead surface states and 3D anisotropic nodal-line structures. Similar to Weyl semimetals, type-II nodal-line semimetals have two crossing bands that are both electron-like or hole-like along a certain direction.
