In this work we demonstrate an integrated microfluidic/photonic architecture for performing dynamic optofluidic trapping and transport of particles in the evanescent field of solid core waveguides. Our architecture consists of SU-8 polymer waveguides combined with soft lithography defined poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic channels. The forces exerted by the evanescent field result in both the attraction of particles to the waveguide surface and propulsion in the direction of optical propagation both perpendicular and opposite to the direction of pressure-driven flow. Velocities as high as 28 mum/s were achieved for 3 mum diameter polystyrene spheres with an estimated 53.5 mW of guided optical power at the trapping location. The particle-size dependence of the optical forces in such devices is also characterized.

In this Letter, we have proposed an all-optical scheme for chiral particle separation with a microcylinder-pair system (MCPS) with a micrometer scale channel, applicable in microfluidic environments. By illuminating the MCPS with two counter-incident plane waves of orthogonal polarization, the electromagnetic chirality gradient can be generated. The MCPS can also enhance chirality-dependent lateral optical forces of the coupled fields so that the setup can shift trapping equilibrium positions for opposite-handedness nanoparticles and make the sideways motion observable.

The significance of bound states in the continuum (BICs) lies in their potential for theoretically infinite quality factors. However, their actual quality factors are limited by imperfections in fabrication, which lead to coupling with the radiation continuum. In this study, we present a novel approach to address this issue by introducing a merging BIC regime based on a Lieb lattice.

Moving meniscus-assisted vertical lifting is a commonly employed particle assembly technique to realize large-area particle patterning for the easy fabrication of colloidal photonic crystals and sensors. Though great success has been achieved for large-area patterning, inscribing desired patterns over the target substrate with precise control over the morphology remains a challenge. The target substrates need to be functionalized (physically or chemically) to realize desired patterns, which increases the complexity and limits their applicability to specific particle-liquid combinations.

Nanoparticles are produced at accelerating rates, are increasingly integrated into scientific and industrial applications, and are widely discharged into the environment. Analytical techniques are required to characterize parameters such as particle number concentrations, mass and size distributions, molecular and elemental compositions, and particle stability. This is not only relevant to investigate their utility for various industrial or medical applications and for controlling the manufacturing processes but also to assess toxicity and environmental fate.

Viral outbreaks can cause widespread disruption, creating the need for diagnostic tools that provide high performance and sample versatility at the point of use with moderate complexity. Current gold standards such as PCR and rapid antigen tests fall short in one or more of these aspects. Here, we report a label-free and amplification-free nanopore sensor platform that overcomes these challenges via direct detection and quantification of viral RNA in clinical samples from a variety of biological fluids.
