The ability to draw analogies requires 2 key cognitive processes, relational integration and resolution of interference. The present study aimed to identify the neural correlates of both component processes of analogical reasoning within a single, nonverbal analogy task using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging. Participants verified whether a visual analogy was true by considering either 1 or 3 relational dimensions. On half of the trials, there was an additional need to resolve interference in order to make a correct judgment. Increase in the number of dimensions to integrate was associated with increased activation in the lateral prefrontal cortex as well as lateral frontal pole in both hemispheres. When there was a need to resolve interference during reasoning, activation increased in the lateral prefrontal cortex but not in the frontal pole. We identified regions in the middle and inferior frontal gyri which were exclusively sensitive to demands on each component process, in addition to a partial overlap between these neural correlates of each component process. These results indicate that analogical reasoning is mediated by the coordination of multiple regions of the prefrontal cortex, of which some are sensitive to demands on only one of these 2 component processes, whereas others are sensitive to both.

This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of analogue and virtual typodont/simulation training in orthodontic education, focusing on its impact on clinical skills, motivation, and communication (PROSPERO ID# CRD42024560497). A comprehensive search across PubMed, the Cochrane Library, ERIC, and CINAHL identified 11 studies that examined various simulation-based learning approaches. The findings indicate that simulation-based training enhances short-term diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and practical skills in orthodontics, particularly in tasks such as bracket bonding and clinical reasoning.

Various skills related to critical thinking, reasoning, and scientific reasoning are defined as essential for students in policy documents and curricula around the world as essential both in school and in everyday life. However, these concepts are often too vaguely defined and explained for a clear implementation in the classroom. In this conceptual article, the authors propose the following questions: (1) How are the concepts of thinking and reasoning as defined in policy documents reflected in curriculum descriptions across different disciplines? (2) To what extent do reasoning activities and processes overlap across different disciplines? (3) How can reasoning skills (particularly: analysis, evaluation, and creation) be described based on reasoning activities or processes and the outputs or products? Based on the literature review, it is concluded that researchers in various science disciplines have defined the aspects of reasoning that are typical for their respective disciplines, considering content, procedural knowledge, and epistemic knowledge.

An essential aspect of the EU's "Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals" (REACH) regulation is the European Chemicals Agency's (ECHA) evaluation of testing proposals submitted by registrants to address data gaps. Registrants may propose adaptations, such as read-across, to waive standard testing; however, it is widely believed that ECHA often finds justifications for read-across hypotheses inadequate. From 2008 to August 2023, 2,630 testing proposals were submitted to ECHA; of these, 1,538 had published decisions that were systematically evaluated in this study.

This research presents, for the first time, a comprehensive and rigorous investigation of ruthenium(II) chalcogenonitrosyl bonding situations in two sets of coordination compounds: [Ru(NE)Cl(L)] (1a-4a) and [Ru(NE)Cl(L)] (1b-4b), where E = O, S, Se, Te. Prior to and following the one-electron reduction, the Ru-NE bonding situations were subjected to analysis. The calculated geometric parameters indicate that both the Ru-NE and N-E bond lengths are susceptible to variation depending on the nature of the chalcogen employed.
