We propose an all-optical modulation format conversion scheme from non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) to return-to-zero (RZ) multiple-level phase-shift-keying (PSK) based on nonlinearity in optical fiber. The proposed conversion scheme is numerically investigated and experimentally demonstrated. We experimentally demonstrate error-free operation of NRZ-OOK/RZ- binary PSK conversion at 10.7 Gb/s. The operation of the NRZ-OOK/RZ-quadrature PSK conversion is shown by eye opening after balanced receiving at a symbol rate of 10.7 Gsymbol/s. In addition, we demonstrate the feasibility of the modulation format conversion from NRZ-OOK to RZ-8-levels PSK by numerical simulation.

Camel α-Lactalbumin (α-LAC) has been shown to exert bioactivities for Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and anti-inflammation, showing the ability to treat obesity-related metabolic disorders. Herein, we present a novel process to purify α-LAC in a single chromatographic step from camel whey in a flow-through format. We also demonstrate the role of α-LAC modulation strategies for the treatment of obesity.

In the germ line and during early embryogenesis, DNA methylation (DNAme) undergoes global erasure and re-establishment to support germ cell and embryonic development. While DNAme acquisition during male germ cell development is essential for setting genomic DNA methylation imprints, other intergenerational roles for paternal DNAme in defining embryonic chromatin are unknown. Through conditional gene deletion of the de novo DNA methyltransferases Dnmt3a and/or Dnmt3b, we observe that DNMT3A primarily safeguards against DNA hypomethylation in undifferentiated spermatogonia, while DNMT3B catalyzes de novo DNAme during spermatogonial differentiation.

Glycoconjugates are present on microbial surfaces and play critical roles in modulating interactions with the environment and the host. Extensive research on microbial glycans, including elucidating the structural diversity of the glycan moieties of glycoconjugates and polysaccharides, has been carried out to investigate the function of glycans in modulating the interactions between the host and microbes, to explore their potential applications in the therapeutic targeting of pathogenic species, and in the use as probiotics in gut microbiomes. However, glycan-related information is dispersed across numerous databases and a vast amount of literature, which makes it laborious and time-consuming to identify and gather the relevant information about microbial glycosylation.

Plants exude a wide variety of compounds into the rhizosphere, modulating soil functioning and diversity. The number of studies investigating exudation has exponentially increased over the past decades. Yet, the high inter-study variability of the results is slowing down our understanding of root-soil interactions.

Previous research shows that a single session of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) can improve the accuracy of episodic memory retrieval, but stimulation effects are not always found and may be moderated by time of day. Here, we report the results from a rigorous clinical trial (NCT03723850) designed to replicate these tDCS findings in younger adults and extend them to cognitively normal older adults. We conducted the largest double-blind, between-subjects tDCS study on memory retrieval in younger and older adults to date.
