We present an original and compact optical system inspired by the unusual eyes of a Strepsipteran insect called Xenos peckii. It is designed for a field of view of 30 degrees and is composed of multiple telescopes. An array of prisms of various angles is placed in front of these telescopes in order to set a different field of view for each channel. This type of camera operates in the [3-5 microm] spectral bandwidth and is entirely integrated in a Dewar in order to maximize its compactness. Experimental images are presented to validate this design.

Twisted-wing insects (Strepsiptera) are an enigmatic order of parasites with unusual life histories and striking sexual dimorphism. Males emerge from hosts as free-living winged adults, while females from most species remain as endoparasites that retain larval traits. Due to scarce genomic data and phylogenetic controversies, Strepsiptera was only recently placed as the closest living relative to beetles (Coleoptera).

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising technology for wearable sensors due to its fingerprint spectrum and high detection sensitivity. However, since SERS-activity is sensitive to both the distribution of "hotspots" and excitation angle, it is profoundly challenging to develop a wearable SERS sensor with high stability under various deformations during movements. Herein, inspired by omnidirectional light-harvesting of the compound eye of Xenos Peckii, a wearable SERS sensor is developed using omnidirectional plasmonic nanovoids array (OPNA), which is prepared by assembling a monolayer of metal nanoparticles into the artificial plasmonic compound-eye (APC).

The highly specialized evolution of Strepsiptera has produced one of the most unusual eyes among mature insects, perhaps in line with their extremely complex and challenging life cycle. This relatively rare insect order is one of the few for which it has been unclear what spectral classes of photoreceptors any of its members may possess, an even more apt question given the nocturnal evolution of the group. To address this question, we performed electroretinograms on adult male Xenos peckii: we measured spectral responses to equi-quantal monochromatic light flashes of different wavelengths, and established VlogI relationships to calculate spectral sensitivities.

The sex pheromone of the endoparasitoid insect Xenos peckii (Strepsiptera: Xenidae) was recently identified as (7E,11E)-3,5,9,11-tetramethyl-7,11-tridecadienal. Herein we report the asymmetric synthesis of three candidate stereostructures for this pheromone using a synthetic strategy that relies on an sp(3) -sp(2) Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to construct the correctly configured C7-alkene function. Comparison of (1) H NMR spectra derived from the candidate stereostructures to that of the natural sex pheromone indicated a relative configuration of (3R*,5S*,9R*).
