The aim of this study was to examine pressure sensitivity at the donor site after breast reconstruction with deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEAP). In a cross-sectional survey, 2 groups of patients were analyzed. The DIEAP group consisted of 30 women who had previously had secondary breast reconstruction with DIEAP flap after mastectomy for breast cancer. The control group consisted of 7 women with no previous abdominal incisions planned for secondary breast reconstruction with DIEAP. Pressure thresholds were tested within the margins of the abdominal wall using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments. In the DIEAP group a pattern of higher pressure thresholds was observed in the proximity of the scar. Comparing the 2 groups, significant higher pressure thresholds were found in the DIEAP group in the scar on both sides and in the midline from the scar to the umbilical level. Our data show that the abdominoplasty performed during breast reconstruction with DIEAP reduces cutaneous sensitivity in the donor site area.

Silicone breast implants (SBIs) are commonly used for breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. However, long-term complications associated with SBI, such as rupture and infection, require careful monitoring. Here, we report a case in which coronavirus disease 2019 infection led to immunosuppression and secondary bacterial infection, resulting in skin ulceration and eventual removal of the SBI.

Purpose: This study evaluates the hypothesis that a volumetric skin-sparing planning technique (SSPT) will reduce acute dermatitis in patients treated to the breast or chest wall (CW) with proton pencil-beam scanning (PBS).
Methods And Materials: In January 2022, our center incorporated volumetric-based skin-sparing objectives in addition to skin hot spot evaluation as an SSPT. The SSPT incorporated an objective to limit the volume of a skin evaluation structure (skin-eval) receiving 95% of the prescription dose or more (V95%Rx) to ideally < 50%.

We present an approach for evaluating abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans that generates reproducible measures relevant to donor site morbidity after abdominally based breast reconstruction. Seventeen preoperative CT metrics were measured in 20 patients with software: interanterior superior iliac spine distance; abdominal wall protrusion; interrectus distance; rectus abdominis width, thickness, and width-to-thickness ratio; abdominal wall thickness; subcutaneous fat volume; visceral fat volume; right/left psoas volumes and densities; and right/left rectus abdominis volumes and densities. Two operators performed measures to determine interrater reliability (n = 10).
