The nitrate-induced photodegradation of chlorotoluron was demonstrated to occur efficiently in natural water through two series of experiments in outdoor aquatic mesocosms. During the first campaign, it was shown that the pesticide degradation kinetics was clearly dependent on nitrate concentration. This parameter also influenced the accumulation of the first- and second-generation byproducts, including predominantly N-terminus oxidation products and nitro-derivatives of the phenyl ring. The latter compounds, specific to the NO3- -induced photoprocess, appeared particularly abundant as compared to laboratory-simulated sunlight irradiation conditions. During the second campaign, a dual day-night sampling was achieved, which demonstrated the almost exclusive role of photodegradation versus biodegradation.

Photoaging is an important reaction for waste plastics in the aquatic environment and plays a key role in the lifetime of plastics. Nevertheless, when natural photosensitive substances such as nitrate participate in this process, the physiochemical changes in plastics and the corresponding reaction mechanisms are not well-understood. In this work, the photochemical behavior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in deionized water and nitrate solution was systematically investigated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation.

In this study, the influence of HCO on NO-induced photosensitive degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) under UV irradiation was investigated. It was found that the removal of SMX by UV in the presence of NO improved significantly compared to its photolysis, which was confirmed to be due to the role of hydroxyl radical (HO) formed through UV-activated NO. However, the addition of HCO in UV/NO system could further enhance SMX degradation, which was verified to be ascribed to the formed carbonate radical (CO) through the reaction of HCO with HO.

Utilization of renewable solar energy driven advanced oxidation processes for oil sands process water (OSPW) remediation has received extensive attention. Naturally existing inorganic photosensitizer in OSPW was investigated in this work to provide information about the application of indirect photolysis treatment of organic contaminants in OSPW. OSPW and OSPW organic fraction were exposed under UV irradiance with fluence of 10 J/cm to investigate the effect of OSPW inorganic fraction (OSPW-IF) on the non-catalytic photolysis of naphthenic acids (NAs) in OSPW.

The occurrence of sunscreen agents in natural environment is of scientific concern recently due to their potential risk to ecology system and human beings as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In this work the photodegradation mechanism and pathways of sunscreen agent 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) were investigated under artificial solar irradiation with the goal of assessing the potential of photolysis as a transformation mechanism in aquatic environments. The quantum yield of PBSA direct photolysis in pH 6.

The extensive utilization of β-blockers worldwide led to frequent detection in natural water. In this study the photolysis behavior of atenolol (ATL) and toxicity of its photodegradation products were investigated in the presence of nitrate ions. The results showed that ATL photodegradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics upon simulated solar irradiation.
