This work presents a novel GA-SA approach to retrieve the constituents of water bodies from remote sensing of ocean color. This approach is validated and compared to the existing algorithms using the same synthetic and in-situ datasets compiled by the International Ocean Color Coordinate Group. Comparing to the other methods, the GA-SA approach provides better retrievals for both the inherent optical properties and various water constituents. This novel approach is successfully applied in processing the images taken by MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and generates regional maps of chlorophyll-a concentration, total suspended matter, and the absorption coefficient of color dissolved organic matter at 443nm.

Shipboard domestic sewage, encompassing both black water and gray water, has the potential to transport significant quantities of environmentally harmful microplastics, a concern that has garnered increasing global attention. In this study, Fourier infrared (FTIR) detection was used to detect microplastics in marine domestic wastewater. The primary objective was to evaluate the abundance and characteristics of microplastics present in ship domestic sewage, investigate potential sources and influencing factors, and assess the ecological risks associated with ship sewage through analyses of microplastic abundance and hazard indices.

Microplastics, small pieces of plastic measuring less than five millimeters, have spread to all ecosystems, even those in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. In particular, microplastics have been found contaminating water in emerging fjords, or inlets created by deglaciation, along the Antarctic Peninsula. Microplastics contamination puts fjord communities, which are unique and dominated by benthic species, at high risk for microplastic exposure leading to issues with feeding, endocrine disruption, and exposure to adsorbed toxins, all of which lower fecundity and survivability.

Temporal variability and associated driving factors of sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) in coastal waters have been extensively studied worldwide; however, the importance and spatial heterogeneity of these driving factors remain insufficiently documented. This study addressed this gap by investigating the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) from August 2002 to June 2016, using long-term remote sensing-derived data of Chl-a and potential driving factors, including total suspended solids (TSS), precipitation, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and sea surface temperature (SST); and in situ measurements of potential driving factors, including river discharge, wind speed, alongshore wind (u), cross-shore wind (v), and tidal range. A pixel-by-pixel correlation analysis was conducted to preliminarily examine the relationships between these potential driving factors and Chl-a.

The water quality and associated ecological risks in subsidence water bodies formed by underground coal mining are an increasing global concern. However, long-term water quality changes in these subsidence water bodies, especially across different spatial regions, remain poorly understood. This paper, by mapping the Forel-Ule index (FUI) a key indicator of water color, using Landsat datasets to reveal the dynamic evolution of water quality in 402 subsidence water bodies in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of eastern China from 1990 to 2020, covering their life cycle from formation to extinction.
