Background: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a promising methodology for cancer treatment. Methylene blue (MB) is a phenothiazine dye that is widely used in clinical practice and can be administered intravenously.

Materials And Methods: The sonodynamic antitumor effect of 1, 10 and 100 microM MB on sarcoma180 (S180) cells was investigated in vitro.

Results: After ultrasound (US) exposure at 0.24 W/cm(2) for 30 seconds, survival rates of S180 cells in the presence of 10 and 100 microM MB were significantly lower than that of the control group. These effects were significantly inhibited by the addition of D-mannitol, but not by L-histidine or superoxide dismutase. Microvilli loss and blebbing on the surface of S180 cells were observed in the presence of 100 muM MB after US exposure.

Conclusion: MB has a sonodynamic antitumor effect on S180 cells in vitro and the hydroxyl radical appears to be the principal mediator of this effect.

The chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) has been widely used for treating solid tumors attributed to its antiproliferative effectiveness; however, its clinical use is limited due to side effects, including cardiotoxicity, myelosuppression, and drug resistance. Combining DOX with buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), a glutathione (GSH) synthesis inhibitor, showed promising results in overcoming these adverse effects, potentially reducing the required DOX dose while maintaining efficacy. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of different concentrations of BSO and DOX, both individually and in combination, utilizing B16/F10 (murine melanoma), SNB-19 (human glioblastoma), S180 (murine sarcoma), and SVEC4-10 (murine endothelial) cell lines.

Purpose: This study aimed to synthesize curcumin-modified selenium (Cur/Se) nanoparticles via a simple and green method for tumour treatment and explore their effects on the gut microbiota.

Methods: Curcumin was applied as a reducing and capping agent for the construction of Cur/Se nanoparticles with Tween 80 as a stabilizer. The drug release behaviour and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of the Cur/Se nanoparticles were detected.

Background: The safety and efficacy of herbal medicines including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been one of the major scientific problems in the medical field. In TCM prescriptions, reasonable herbal combinations bring stronger efficacy and low risk of toxicity. However, the rules and mechanisms for herbal combinations are far from complete understood yet.

Article Synopsis
  • Two polysaccharides, PGP-90 and PGP-100, were extracted from Peach gum using alkaline electrolyte water and characterized as AG-II arabinogalactans with specific branching structures.
  • Animal studies showed that both polysaccharides enhanced immune function, increased lymphocyte proliferation, improved macrophage activity, and altered lymphocyte subpopulations in tumor-bearing mice.
  • PGP-90 and PGP-100 also promoted cytokine secretion and reduced tumor growth, with PGP-100 showing greater anti-tumor effects, indicating potential as functional anti-tumor agents.
