This article highlights the importance of advance care planning (ACP) in good end-of-life care (EOLC). The judgement by the Supreme Court of India legalised Advance Medical Directives in 2018 and in January 2023, amended the procedure to make it easier. The article describes the advantages of ACP, the numerous ethical dilemmas at the end of life that it seeks to address and avoid, the latest legal procedure, the barriers, the need for awareness among healthcare providers, legal professionals as well as the public, and the need for legislation to translate the law into action.

Stories about personal experiences of assisted dying, a term comprising both instances when a lethal substance is administered by a physician or by the patient themselves, are frequently cited in law-making processes. These experiences of healthcare systems and the laws governing end-of-life procedures thereby interactively influence the future of medicine at the deathbed. With more countries legalising some form of assisted dying or opening political debate about the issue, addressing how these personal stories shape public opinions and social institutions is timely.

Background: This paper reports on the first qualitative study to interview people prescribed cannabis in the UK. Cannabis is a class B controlled substance under the 1971 Misuse of Drugs (MoD) Act, but a 2018 change to UK regulations provided for the prescription of cannabis for medical purposes. Relatively few people have been able to access a prescription, despite this policy change.
