We present a description of fluorescence decay kinetics in complex environments based on gamma functions rather than the conventional approach using exponentials. The gamma function description is tested in measurements on the temperature dependence of the protein human serum albumin (HSA), N-acetyl tryptophanamide (NATA), and 2, 5-dipenyl oxazole (PPO). The monitoring of macromolecular structure and dynamics is demonstrated by means of distinct tryptophan (Trp) rotamer populations and their interconversion in HSA.

Excited-State Proton Transfer Dynamics of Cyanonaphthol in Protic Ionic Liquids: Concerted Effects of Basicity of Anions and Alkyl Carbons in Cations.

Excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions of 5-cyano-2-naphthol (5CN2) and 5,8-dicyano-2-naphthol (DCN2) were investigated in protic ionic liquids (PILs) composed of quaternary ammonium (NH) ( = 2, 4, or 8) and hexanoate (CHCOO) using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The effects of the number of alkyl carbons in the cation and the basicity of the anion on the reaction yield and dynamics were examined. In a series of [NH][CHCOO], fluorescence from the hydrogen-bonding complex (AHBX) of a proton-dissociated form (RO) with a solvent acid in the electronic excited state was observed between the fluorescence bands of an acidic form (ROH) and an anionic form (RO) as in the case of [NH][CFCOO] (Fujii et al.

Live imaging of paracrine signaling: Advances in visualization and tracking techniques.

Department of Pathology and Biology of Diseases, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University.

Live imaging techniques have revolutionized our understanding of paracrine signaling, a crucial form of cell-to-cell communication in biological processes. This review examines recent advances in visualizing and tracking paracrine factors through four key stages: secretion from producing cells, diffusion through extracellular space, binding to target cells, and activation of intracellular signaling within target cells. Paracrine factor secretion can be directly visualized by fluorescent protein tagging to ligand, or indirectly by visualizing the cleavage of the transmembrane pro-ligands or plasma membrane fusion of endosomes comprising the paracrine factors.

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-protected gold nanoclusters display high stability and high photoluminescence, making them well-suited for fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapeutic applications. We report herein the synthesis of two bisNHC-protected Au nanoclusters with π-extended aromatic systems. Depending on the position of the π-extended aromatic system, changes to the structure of the ligand shell in the cluster are observed, with the ability to correlate increases in rigidity with increases in fluorescence quantum yield.

Chromophores incorporated into rigid polymer matrices may exhibit novel photophysical properties distinct from those in liquid solutions. In this work, we explored the decay path of the second ππ* state (2ππ*) of riboflavin in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions and films with various acidities. Highly efficient internal conversion from 2ππ* to the lowest ππ* state (1ππ*) induced by slight in-plane motion is demonstrated in all PVA solutions and films, irrespective of environmental acidity and rigidification.

Elevated temperatures can lead to reabsorption and color drift, compromising the quality of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (pc-WLED) devices. To ensure the performance of WLEDs under these conditions, it is essential to develop luminescent materials that maintain stable color. Consequently, there is a pressing need for single-phase white-emitting phosphors with robust chromatic stability.
