When Photoelectrons Meet Gas Molecules: Determining the Role of Inelastic Scattering in Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

ACS Cent Sci

January 2025

Chemical Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California 94720, United States.

Inelastic photoelectron scattering (IPES) by gas molecules, a critical phenomenon observed in ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), complicates spectral interpretation due to kinetic energy loss in the primary spectrum and the appearance of additional features at higher binding energies. In this study, we systematically investigate IPES in various gas environments using APXPS, providing detailed insights into interactions between photoelectrons emitted from solid surfaces and surrounding gas molecules. Core-level XPS spectra of Au, Ag, Zn, and Cu metals were recorded over a wide kinetic energy range in the presence of CO, N, Ar, and H gases, demonstrating the universal nature of IPES across different systems.

LiF Artifacts in XPS Analysis of the SEI for Lithium Metal Batteries.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Physics, Jinan University, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510632, P. R. China.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is considered to be the key to the performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The analysis of the SEI and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) composition (especially F 1s spectra) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has become a consensus among researchers. However, the surface-sensitive XPS characterization is susceptible to LiF artifacts due to several factors, leading to the overexaggerated role of LiF in the analysis of the SEI and CEI.

Exploiting biomimetic perception of invisible spectra in flexible artificial human vision systems (HVSs) is crucial for real-time dynamic information processing. Nevertheless, the fast processing of motion objects in natural environments poses a challenge, necessitating that these artificial HVSs simultaneously have swift photoresponse and nonvolatile memory. Here, inspired by the human retina, we propose a flexible UV neuromorphic visual synaptic device (NeuVSD) based on GaO@GaN-composited nanowires for dynamic visual perception.

Two Steps Li Ion Storage Mechanism in Ruddlesden-Popper LiLaTiO.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Emerging Materials R&D Division, Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology, Jinju, Gyeongnam, 52851, Republic of Korea.

Innovative anode materials are essential for achieving high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with longer lifetimes. Thus far, only a few studies have explored the use of layered perovskite structures as LIB anode materials. In this study, the study demonstrates the performance and charge/discharge mechanism of the previously undefined Ruddlesden-Popper Li₂La₂Ti₃O₁₀ (RPLLTO) as an anode material for LIBs.

Construction of environmentally stable self-adhesive conductive cellulose hydrogel for electronic skin sensor via autocatalytic fast polymerization strategy at room temperature.

Int J Biol Macromol

Engineering Research Center of Forestry Biomass Materials and Bioenergy (Ministry of Education), National Forest and Grass Administration Woody Spices (East China) Engineering Technology Research Center, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing 100083, China. Electronic address:

Bio-based conductive hydrogels are catching a widespread attention in the field of flexible sensors and human-machine interface interaction. Here, an enhanced autocatalytic system constructed from dopamine-encapsulated cellulose nanofibers (DA@CNF) and Cu in a glycerol-water binary solvent achieved fast auto-polymerization of hydrogels within 60 s. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV-vis spectrum (UV), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to characterize the autocatalytic system.
