Background: The protective effect of heat preconditioning has been ascribed to the induction of heat shock proteins (HSP) in the liver. We detected an increase in Bcl-xL expression prior to HSP 70 expression in the rat liver after heat preconditioning. The net effect of overexpression of human Bcl-xL with a recombinant adenovector was estimated in a partial ischemia/reperfusion model of the mouse liver.

Materials And Methods: The time courses of the expression of HSP, Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, Bax, and Bag-1 in the SD rat liver after heat preconditioning were studied by Western blotting. The localizations of Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, and Bax at 6 h after preconditioning were examined by immunostaining. The expression of Bcl-xL in the C57/BL mouse liver after intravenous injection of the recombinant adenovector was assessed by Western blotting and immunostaining. The protective effect of overexpression of Bcl-xL was estimated in a 60-min partial ischemia/reperfusion model of the mouse liver.

Results: The expression of Bcl-xL peaked 12 h after heat preconditioning. The overexpression of Bcl-xL decreased enzyme release, histological cell injury, and the number of TUNEL-positive cells.

Conclusion: Transfer of the human Bcl-xL gene to the liver had a protective effect against ischemia/reperfusion injury in a mouse model.

Transition from multi-year La Niña to strong El Niño rare but increased under global warming.

Sci Bull (Beijing)

December 2024

NOAA/Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, Seattle, Washington DC 20005, USA.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exhibits a strong asymmetry between warm El Niño and cold La Niña in amplitude and temporal evolution. An El Niño often leads to a heat discharge in the equatorial Pacific conducive to its rapid termination and transition to a La Niña, whereas a La Niña persists and recharges the equatorial Pacific for consecutive years preconditioning development of a subsequent El Niño, as occurred in 2020-2023. Whether the multiyear-long heat recharge increases the likelihood of a transition to a strong El Niño remains unknown.

Effect of Ischemic Preconditioning on Endurance Running Performance in the Heat.

J Sports Sci Med

December 2024

Integrative Exercise Physiology Laboratory, Department of Physical Education, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju, South Korea.

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is a strategy that may enhances endurance performance in thermoneutral environments. Exercising in the heat increases thermoregulatory and cardiovascular strain, decreasing endurance performance. The current study aimed to determine whether IPC administration improves endurance performance in the heat.

Touch, light, wounding: how anaesthetics affect plant sensing abilities.

Anaesthetics affect not only humans and animals but also plants. Plants exposed to certain anaesthetics lose their ability to respond adequately to various stimuli such as touch, injury or light. Available results indicate that anaesthetics modulate ion channel activities in plants, e.

Introduction: l-glutamine has been shown to have cardioprotective effects in models of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Its potential cardioprotective effects when given before and during early reperfusion, however, have not been studied.

Methods: This study hypothesized that l-glutamine administered before and after myocardial ischemia provides better cardioprotection than when administered after ischemia only.

Mesenchymal stromal cells deliver HS-enhanced Nrf2 via extracellular vesicles to mediate mitochondrial homeostasis for repairing hypoxia-ischemia brain damage.

Article Synopsis
  • Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are being investigated for their potential to treat neurological diseases through their extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly in conditions of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) brain damage.
  • In this study, modified EVs from MSCs preconditioned with NaHS reduced oxidative stress and improved mitochondrial function in HI mice when delivered intranasally, compared to regular EVs.
  • The mechanism involved the upregulation of the Nrf2 protein, which was loaded into EVs, leading to enhanced delivery of this antioxidant to neurons, and the research shows that knocking down Nrf2 in MSCs weakened the therapeutic effects of HS-EVs.
