As Part III of this series, this paper focuses on an above-threshold modal analysis which includes gain saturation effects in the surface-emitting chirped circular grating lasers. We derive an exact energy relation which states that, in steady state, the net power generated in the gain medium is equal to the sum of peripheral leakage power and vertical emission power. This relation is particularly useful in checking the accuracy of numerical mode solving. Numerical simulations demonstrate the dependence of required pump level on the vertical emission power and compare the laser threshold and energy conversion efficiency under uniform, Gaussian, and annular pump profiles. A larger overlap between the pump profile and modal intensity distribution leads to a lower threshold and a higher energy conversion efficiency. Finally the dependence of required pump level on device sizes offers us new design guidelines of these lasers for single-mode, high-efficiency, high-power applications.

Objective: This study examined the lived employment experiences of young adults with childhood and adult-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: Participants were recruited from three Canadian lupus clinics and asked to complete, semi-structured, qualitative video/phone interviews. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis.

Currently, bacterial classification at the species level relies on the 95-96% average nucleotide identity (ANI) value that is known to be equivalent to a 70% digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value. However, during the routine identification of bacteria in the uteri of camels with a history of conception failure, we found that four out of the seven strains (2298A, 2569A, 2652, 2571B, 1103A, 2571A, and 335C) could not be assigned to any valid species. Furthermore, a 70% dDDH value did not correspond to a 95-96% ANI value in strain 2569A.

Stress, psychosocial resources and possible interventions: a qualitative study among dental students.

BMC Med Educ

December 2024

Institute of Occupational, Social and Environmental Medicine, Centre for Health and Society, Heinrich Heine University and University Hospital Düsseldorf, Moorenstr. 5, Düsseldorf, 40225, Germany.

Background: Prior studies found that dental students are affected by various stressors during their studies. Those stressors can exert adverse effects on their (mental) health. Our study addresses the lack of qualitative data on students' perspectives by exploring perceived stressors and resources among dental students and interventions suggested by them.

Gain Saturation of Encapsulated CdTe-Ag Quantum Dot Composite in SiO.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Optics & Cogno-Mechatronics Engineering, Pusan National University, Busan 46241, Republic of Korea.

Amplified spontaneous emission of CdTe and CdTe-Ag quantum dot composites were compared for increasing the optical stripe length, whereby optical gain coefficients for various emission wavelengths were obtained. In the case of CdTe-Ag nanoparticle composites, we observed that plasmonic coupling causes both optical enhancement and quenching at different wavelengths, where the amplified spontaneous emission intensity becomes enhanced at short wavelengths but suppressed at long wavelengths (>600 nm). To analyze the logistic stripe length dependence of amplified spontaneous emission intensity, we used a differential method to obtain the gain coefficient beyond the amplification range.

We present a two-stage bismuth-doped fiber amplifier (BDFA) that achieves ultra-broadband amplification from 1280 to 1480 nm. The two-stage BDFA is designed to limit the reabsorption of bismuth-doped silica fiber (BDSF) by high-power pumps pulled fluorescence. A peak gain of 37.
