The adsorbing activity of granulated carbonic sorbents SKN and KAU, as well as their oxidated forms, containing protogenic carboxylic and phenolic groups with respect to Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogenic strains has been studied. As shown in this study, the process of interaction between microorganisms and carbonic sorbents has two stages. At the first stage the main role is played by long-distance electrostatic forces and at the second stage, by Van der Waals short-distance forces, as well as bonds formed between cell structures and surface groupings of carbonaceous materials. In the mechanism of interaction between microbial cells and carbons the geometry of carbon surface plays an important role. KAU(0)-1 exhibits the highest degree of adhesion with respect to pathogenic bacteria.

Several methods involving molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) devoted to extracting and analyzing sulfonamides from different matrices are reported in literature; however, the unresolved analytical issue is obtaining intra-class selectivity between sulfonamides. Here is presented for the first time a method coupling MIPs and enzymatic inhibition assay for the sensitive and selective determination of acetazolamide (ACZ) in biological samples. The MIPs were synthesized by thermal initiated polymerization in acetone, using acrylamide as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker and ACZ as template molecule.

Carbon capture and sequestration is necessary to tackle one of the biggest problems facing society: global climate change resulting from anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO) emissions. Despite this pressing need, we still rely on century-old technology-aqueous amine scrubbers-to selectively remove CO from emission streams. Amine scrubbers are effective due to their exquisite chemoselectivity towards CO to form ammonium carbamates and (bi)carbonates, but suffer from several unavoidable limitations.

Radioactivities of H and C in spent radioactive ion exchange resins and spent radioactive lubricant oils released from nuclear power plants, has been determined using a combustion and sorption method (combustion method). The liquid scintillation counting (LSC) spectra showed that the interference of other radionuclides has not significantly affected the determination of radioactivities of H and C in the radwaste samples. The chemical structure of CO, which originated from the combustion of radwastes, trapped C sorbent has been investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

In this paper we describe the application of a needle trap microextraction device packed with graphene nanoplatelets for the sampling and analysis of perchloroethylene in dry cleaning. The study was carried out in two phases. First the parameters for the sampling and analysis of perchloroethylene by NTD were evaluated and optimized in the laboratory.

Supernatant obtained after high-speed centrifugation of disrupted thylakoids that had been washed free from extrathylakoid carbonic anhydrases demonstrated carbonic anhydrase activity that was inhibited by the specific inhibitors acetazolamide and ethoxyzolamide. A distinctive feature of the effect of Triton X-100 on this activity also suggested that the source of the activity is a soluble protein. Native electrophoresis of a preparation obtained using chromatography with agarose/mafenide as an affinity sorbent revealed one protein band with carbonic anhydrase activity.
