Pulsed (35)Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) experiments have been performed on 250-mg tablets of the antidiabetic medicine Diabinese to establish the conditions needed for noninvasive quantitative analysis of the medicine in standard bottles. One important condition is the generation of a uniform radio-frequency (RF) field over the sample, which has been achieved by two designs of sample coil: one of variable pitch, and the other a resonator that has been fabricated from a single turn of copper sheet with a longitudinal gap bridged by tuning capacitors. The results from blind tests show that the number of tablets in a bottle could be predicted to within +/-3%.

Conformational Space of 3-Chloropropionic Acid in Gas Phase Explored by Rotational Spectroscopy.

J Phys Chem A

December 2024

Departamento de Química Física y Química Inorgánica, Facultad de Ciencias─I.U. CINQUIMA, Paseo de Belén, 7, 47011 Valladolid, Spain.

The conformational space of 3-chloropropionic acid has been studied under the isolated conditions of a supersonic expansion using Stark-modulated free-jet absorption millimeter-wave and centimeter-wave chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy techniques. The rotational spectra originating from the three most stable conformers including Cl and Cl isotopologues were observed in both experiments using helium expansion while a partial conformational relaxation involving skeletal rearrangements takes place in an argon expansion. The rotational parameters, geometries, and energy order were determined from the experiment, allowing a comparison with quantum chemical predictions.

Quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) is a nascent protocol for predicting, solving, and refining crystal structures. QNMRX-CSP employs a combination of solid-state NMR data from quadrupolar nuclides (, nuclear spin >1/2), static lattice energies and electric field gradient (EFG) tensors from dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D2*) calculations, and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data; however, it has so far been applied only to organic HCl salts with small and rigid organic components, using Cl EFG tensor data for both structural refinement and validation. Herein, QNMRX-CSP is extended to ephedrine HCl (Eph) and pseudoephedrine HCl (Pse), which are diastereomeric compounds that feature distinct space groups and organic components that are larger and more flexible.

Planewave-corrected methods have proven effective for accurately modeling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters in crystalline systems. Recent work extended the application of planewave-corrected calculations beyond the second row, predicting EFG tensor parameters for Cl using a simple molecular correction to projector augmented-wave (PAW) density functional theory (DFT). Here we extend this work using fragment and cluster-based calculations coupled with polarizable continuum (PCM) methods to improve further the accuracy of planewave-corrected Cl EFG tensor calculations.

A COmpact Spectrometer for Measurements Of Neutrons at the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak (COSMONAUT) has been developed for spectroscopy measurements of the 2.45 MeV neutron emission from deuterium plasmas at the ASDEX Upgrade. The instrument is based on a CLYC-7 inorganic scintillator, whereby the detection of fusion neutrons occurs via their interaction with 35Cl nuclei in the detector crystal, leading to a peak in the detector response function and providing excellent neutron/gamma-ray discrimination capabilities.
