An array of fused silica waveguiding channels with randomly distributed transverse sizes in a disordered microstructure fiber is shown to allow a highly efficient broadly tunable frequency conversion of low-energy ultrashort laser pulses. Dispersion can be switched in such waveguide arrays by coupling the pump field into waveguiding wires with different diameters. Microstructure-fiber-integrated random arrays of waveguides with diameters ranging from 0.6 up to 1.5 mum can frequency-convert unamplified subnanojoule Ti: sapphire laser pulses with an initial duration of 30 fs to any wavelength within a broad spectral range from 400 up to 700 nm, suggesting interesting fiber-optic strategies for multiplex frequency conversion and sensing.

Context: This study meticulously examines the criteria for assigning electron rearrangements along the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) leading to bond formation and breaking processes during the pyrolytic isomerization of cubane (CUB) to 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) from both thermochemical and bonding perspectives. Notably, no cusp-type function was detected in the initial thermal conversion step of CUB to bicyclo[4.2.

Hypertension or high blood pressure (BP) is a prevalent and manageable chronic condition which is a significant contributor to the total global disease burden. Environmental chemicals, including mercury (Hg), may contribute to hypertension onset and development. Hg is a global health concern, listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a top ten chemical of public health concern.

The quest for novel nonlinear optical (NLO) polymorphs is pivotal for advancing laser technology and frequency conversion applications. We present a detailed study on the synthesis and properties of the 2 polymorph of CHNOZn, which exhibits an enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG) effect, 0.3 times that of KDP, nearly 8-fold higher than the 422 phase.

Polymorphic short insertions and deletions (INDELs ≤ 50 bp) are abundant, although less common than single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Evidence from model organisms shows INDELs to be more strongly influenced by purifying selection than SNPs. Partly for this reason, INDELs are rarely used as markers for demographic processes or to detect divergent selection.
