Objective: Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is the most common iatrogenic form of osteoporosis. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of once-weekly bisphosphonate therapy for prevention and treatment of bone loss in patients on glucocorticoid therapy.

Methods: We conducted a 12-month, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 114 and 59 patients in the treatment and placebo arms, respectively. Participants were stratified according to the duration of prior oral glucocorticoid therapy at randomization. Participants received alendronate 70 mg once weekly (ALN OW) or placebo; all received supplemental daily calcium (1000 mg) and 400 IU vitamin D. Clinical evaluations were performed at baseline, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.

Results: At 12 months, there was a significant mean percentage increase from baseline in the ALN OW group for lumbar spine (2.45%), trochanter (1.27%), total hip (0.75%), and total body (1.70%) bone mineral density (BMD). Comparing ALN OW versus placebo at 12 months, a significant treatment difference for the mean percentage change from baseline was observed for lumbar spine (treatment difference of 2.92%; p
Conclusion: Over 12 months ALN OW significantly increased lumbar spine, trochanter, total hip, and total body BMD compared with baseline among patients taking glucocorticoid therapy. A significant treatment difference versus placebo was observed at 12 months for the mean percentage change from baseline for lumbar spine, trochanter, and total hip.

Dental maxillary sinus pathology: a CBCT-based case-control study.

Odontology

January 2025

Division of Oral Radiology, Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic, Rua Dr. José Rocha Junqueira 13 Campinas, São Paulo, 13045-755, Brazil.

This study evaluated the association between dental infection and maxillary sinus pathology, and the influence of age, sex, type of tooth, root proximity to the sinus floor, the condition of the primary maxillary ostium, and the presence of an accessory maxillary ostium in this process. Computed Tomography scans were selected, and upper posterior teeth were evaluated for the presence of apical periodontitis (AP), bone loss with furcation involvement, and endoperiodontal lesion (EPL), subsequently, sinuses were evaluated for mucosal thickening (MT) and opacification of the maxillary sinus (OMS). Logistic regression models were constructed, and Chi-squared and Fisher's tests were applied.

Chrysoeriol: a natural RANKL inhibitor targeting osteoclastogenesis and ROS regulation for osteoporosis therapy.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

January 2025

The Key Laboratory of Spine and Spinal Cord Disease of Jiangxi Province, Nanchang, 330006, China.

Chrysoeriol (CHE) is a naturally occurring compound with established anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects. This study examines its potential role in regulating osteoclast differentiation and activity, both of which are crucial for bone remodeling. Computational docking revealed high binding affinity between CHE and RANKL, specifically at the Lys-181 residue of RANKL, suggesting potential inhibitory interactions on osteoclastogenesis.

Periodontitis, a common chronic inflammatory condition caused by bacteria, leads to loss of attachment, resorption of alveolar bone, and ultimately tooth loss. Therefore, reducing bacterial load and fostering alveolar bone regeneration are essential components in the treatment of periodontitis. In this study, we prepared smaller-sized Ag-Metal Organic Frameworks (Ag@MOF) and loaded with sodium alginate (Alg) hydrogel for periodontitis treatment.

Obesity is a major public health issue worldwide. Despite various approaches to weight loss, the most effective technique for reducing obesity, as well as diabetes and associated diseases, is bariatric surgery. Increasingly, young women without children are undergoing bariatric surgery, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) being the most common procedure nowadays.

Background: Contemporary guidelines advocate for initial debridement and single-stage definitive fixation with immediate soft tissue reconstruction for open fractures. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of single-stage stabilization and immediate definitive soft tissue coverage in open ankle fractures compared to closed fractures.

Methods: We compared all isolated open ankle fractures (OF) treated between January 2017 and June 2019 to a control group of operatively managed closed ankle fractures (CF).
