Hypothesis: Some physicians advocate that aspiration of elbow joint hematoma in radial head fractures is helpful not only for determining a mechanical block to motion from a fracture fragment but also for improving the elbow motion and pain. However, the supplementary role of intra-articular anaesthetic injection is unclear.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective randomized study, 40 patients with undisplaced radial head fractures (Mason I) were treated with elbow joint aspiration alone (20 patients) or aspiration plus intra-articular injection of 3 mL of bupivacaine 0.5% (20 patients). Active elbow exercises were immediately commenced. The patients were evaluated at 1 day, 1, 3, and 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months, and 1 year.

Results: No difference was found in terms of range of motion, pain and elbow function between the 2 groups in all the examined time points. The improvement in the above parameters achieved a plateau at 3 weeks in both groups.

Discussion: Intra-articular use of local anaesthetic after joint aspiration does not offer any benefit over aspiration alone in the treatment of undisplaced radial head fractures and its routine application is not supported by the clinical data.

IQUB mutation induces radial spoke 1 deficiency causing asthenozoospermia with normal sperm morphology in humans and mice.

Cell Commun Signal

January 2025

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Human Embryo Engineering and Precision Medicine, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Women and Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, 400010, China.

Background: Asthenozoospermia (ASZ) accounts for about 20-40% of male infertility, and genetic factors, contributing to 30-40% of the causes of ASZ, still need further exploration. Radial spokes (RSs), a T-shaped macromolecular complex, connect the peripheral doublet microtubules (DMTs) to a central pair (CP), forming a CP-RS-DMT structure to regulate the beat frequency and amplitude of sperm flagella. To date, many components of RSs and their functions in human sperm flagella remain unclear.

Prognostic Value of the CURL Classification System for Proximal Ulna Fracture Dislocations of the Elbow.

J Shoulder Elbow Surg

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Royal County Sussex Hospital, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, Brighton, UK; Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Brighton, UK. Electronic address:

Background: Proximal ulna fracture-dislocations comprise a wide spectrum of injury. The Coronoid, proximal Ulna, Radius and Ligaments (CURL) classification is a simple framework designed to aid surgical decision making by focusing attention on the key components of the injury and their relative severity. It has been demonstrated to have a high inter and intra-observer reliability.

Objective: To identify the relationship between length of sports experience, muscle mass, and sexual maturity with bone mineral density (BMD) and geometry in adolescent basketball and track and field athletes.

Method: The study included adolescent (11-18 years) athletes, of both sexes, who practiced basketball (n = 26) or track and field (n = 24). Skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis.

Impact of papillary muscle infarction on atrial and ventricular myocardial deformation in non-anterior STEMI patients.

Int J Cardiovasc Imaging

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria (A.O.U.), di Cagliari - Polo di Monserrato s.s. 554 Monserrato (Cagliari), Monserrato, 09045, Italy.

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of papillary muscle (PPM) infarction on left atrial and ventricular strain parameters in patients with non-anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NA-STEMI) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). This retrospective study performed CMR scans on 88 consecutive patients with NA-STEMI (68 males, 65 ± 10.05 years).

Background: Limitations to using the knee as donor cartilage include cartilage thickness mismatch and donor site morbidity. Using the radial head as donor autograft for capitellar lesions may allow for local graft harvest without distant donor site morbidity. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of performing local osteochondral autograft transfer from the nonarticular cartilaginous rim of the radial head to the capitellum.
