Subluminal, luminal and superluminal localized wave solutions to the paraxial pulsed beam equation in free space are determined. A clarification is also made to recent work on pulsed beams of arbitrary speed which are solutions of a narrowband temporal spectrum version of the forward pulsed beam equation.

Miniaturized spectral sensing with a tunable optoelectronic interface.

Sci Adv

Reconstructive optoelectronic spectroscopy has generated substantial interest in the miniaturization of traditional spectroscopic tools, such as spectrometers. However, most state-of-the-art demonstrations face fundamental limits of rank deficiency in the photoresponse matrix. In this work, we demonstrate a miniaturized spectral sensing system using an electrically tunable compact optoelectronic interface, which generates distinguishable photoresponses from various input spectra, enabling accurate spectral identification with a device footprint of 5 micrometers by 5 micrometers.

Humans excel at applying learned behavior to unlearned situations. A crucial component of this generalization behavior is our ability to compose/decompose a whole into reusable parts, an attribute known as compositionality. One of the fundamental questions in robotics concerns this characteristic: How can linguistic compositionality be developed concomitantly with sensorimotor skills through associative learning, particularly when individuals only learn partial linguistic compositions and their corresponding sensorimotor patterns? To address this question, we propose a brain-inspired neural network model that integrates vision, proprioception, and language into a framework of predictive coding and active inference on the basis of the free-energy principle.

The emerging new generation of small-scaled acoustic microrobots is poised to expedite the adoption of microrobotics in biomedical research. Recent designs of these microrobots have enabled intricate bioinspired motions, paving the way for their real-world applications. We present a multiorifice design of air-filled spherical microrobots that convert acoustic wave energy to efficient propulsion through a resonant encapsulated microbubble.

How consumer diversity determines consumption efficiency is a central issue in ecology. In the context of predation and biological control, this relationship concerns predator diversity and predation efficiency. Reduced predation efficiency can result from different predator taxa eating each other in addition to their common prey (interference due to intraguild predation).

Semi-Confinement Effect Enhances CH and CH Production in CO Electrocatalytic Reduction.

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Marine Chemistry Theory and Technology (Ministry of Education), College of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Ocean University of China, 238 Songling Road, Qingdao, 266100, China.

Achieving fast conversion and precise regulation of product selectivity in electrochemical CO reduction reaction (CORR) remains a challenge. The space confinement effect provides a theoretical basis for the design of catalysts of different morphology and sizes and reveals the physical phenomena caused by the confinement of electrons and other particles at the nanoscale. In this work, a semi-confinement concept is introduced and a mesoporous silica nanosphere supported Cu catalyst (Cu-MSN) is prepared as a typical example to realize CORR enhancement and product selectivity regulation (methane vs ethylene).
