Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the various types of end-organ damage associated with sepsis, hepatic injury is linked to significantly higher mortality rates compared to dysfunction in other organ systems. This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers of hepatic injury in sepsis patients through a multi-center, case-control approach.

Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) represents a severe complication of sepsis, substantially elevating both mortality and healthcare costs for patients. Gastrodin (GAS), a principal bioactive constituent of Gastrodia elata Blume, is neuroprotective in various neurological disorders, including ischemic stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and neuropathic pain. In this study, we sought to investigate whether GAS could serve as a protective agent against SAE.

Sepsis often leads to vasoplegia and a hyperdynamic cardiac state, with treatment focused on restoring vascular tone. However, sepsis can also cause reversible myocardial dysfunction, particularly in the elderly with pre-existing heart conditions. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines recommend using dobutamine with norepinephrine or epinephrine alone for patients with septic shock with cardiac dysfunction and persistent hypoperfusion despite adequate fluid resuscitation and stable blood pressure.

This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the association between pre-existing heart failure and both mortality and the recurrence of sepsis. A total of 16,092 sepsis patients without a history of heart failure and 841 sepsis patients with pre-existing heart failure were identified from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care version IV (MIMIC-IV ) database. All patients were adults admitted to intensive care units, and no specific interventions were applied.
