TWEAK is a cytokine of the TNF superfamily that activates the Fn14 receptor. TWEAK may regulate cell proliferation, cell death, cell differentiation, angiogenesis and inflammation. The expression of TWEAK and Fn14 is increased during vascular and renal injury. Inflammatory cytokines increase Fn14 receptor expression in tubular and vascular smooth muscle cells. Moreover, TWEAK induces tubular cell apoptosis under proinflammatory conditions. TWEAK itself contributes to renal and vascular inflammation by promoting chemokine and inflammatory cytokine secretion. Confirmation of its role in acute kidney injury and atherosclerotic lesions formation came from functional studies in experimental animal models. The available evidence suggests that TWEAK might be a target for therapeutic intervention in renal and vascular injury and its role in different forms of tissue damage should be further explored.

Smoking is a known preventable risk factor for vascular diseases. However, it is one of the most forgotten risks when we talk about its relationship with kidney disease. Following the publication of the "Consensus statement on smoking and vascular risk" promoted by the autonomous societies of hypertension and vascular risk of Spain, we consider that the nephrology community should be alerted about the deleterious effects of exposure to tobacco smoke and its consequences on renal damage.

Background And Aims: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted greatest among patients with pre-existing chronic health conditions, including chronic kidney disease. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the 30-day mortality of patients receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT) after infection with COVID-19, living in Australia and New Zealand between 2020 and 2022, including patients on haemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and renal transplant (KT) recipients.
