Background: In 1985, the Sheet Metal Workers International Association and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Association formed The Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) to examine the health hazards of the sheet metal industry. Between 1986 and 2004 18,211 individuals were examined. At the time of the first examination 9.6% of all participants (1,745) had findings consistent with parenchymal disease (ILO > 1/0), and 21% (3,827) had pleural scarring.

Methods: 2181-Two thousand hundred eighty-one who had no radiographic evidence of pneumoconiosis on baseline examination underwent a second examination.

Results: By the second examination, 5.3% had developed parenchymal disease on chest radiograph; an additional 12.4% had developed pleural scarring without parenchymal disease. Factors that predicted new cases of pneumoconiosis on radiograph were the calendar year the worker entered the sheet metal trade, smoking, and shipyard work. Forty-seven percent of those smoking at the time of initial exam reported having quit smoking by the second examination.

Conclusions: Asbestosis is still occurring 50 years after first exposure. Exposed workers benefit from medical screening programs that incorporate smoking cessation.

This study presents a novel method for the efficient preparation of peptide-based films through microwave-assisted Lewis acid catalysis (MALC) of buckwheat globulin (BG). The MALC process efficiently degraded BG into small molecular peptides (1.6-1.

The simultaneous removal reaction (SRR) is a pioneering approach for achieving the simultaneous removal of anthropogenic NO and CO pollutants through catalytic reactions. To facilitate this removal across diverse industrial fields, it is crucial to understand the trade-offs and synergies among the multiple reactions involved in the SRR process. In this study, we developed mixed metal oxide nanostructures derived from layered double hydroxides as catalysts for the SRR, achieving high catalytic conversions of 93.

Recent experimental realizations of bilayer boron materials motivated us to study the structure and properties of α-sheet-based bilayer borophenes with interlayer covalent bonds. As shown here, at least three stacking variations are possible: AA, AB, and [Formula: see text]. The on-top AA-stacking has been obtained experimentally supported on a metallic substrate.

Article Synopsis
  • Using alternating currents (AC) can effectively prevent the formation of mineral crystals on surfaces in contact with super-saturated fluids, such as heat exchangers and pipes.
  • The study demonstrates that periodic charging and discharging of the electrical double layer (EDL) on titanium sheets in super-saturated CaCO solutions inhibits both crystal nucleation and growth due to enhanced ion migration.
  • Operating at 4 V and frequencies between 0.1-10 Hz results in over 96% reduction in turbidity and over 92% reduction in calcium carbonate coverage, showcasing a promising method for controlling mineral scaling in various industrial applications.

Article Synopsis
  • β-Amyloid deposition, oxidative stress, and metal ion imbalance are key features of Alzheimer's disease, creating a need for effective multi-target therapies.
  • Researchers developed multifunctional selenium-doped carbonized polymer dots (SeCDs) to inhibit Aβ aggregation, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS), and chelate copper ions.
  • SeCDs successfully clear harmful radicals and bind Cu ions, lowering cytotoxicity related to Aβ-Cu complexes, and show promise as a treatment option by reducing intracellular ROS levels.
