This paper presents a computer-aided diagnosis technique for improving the accuracy of diagnosing the Alzheimer's type dementia. The proposed methodology is based on the calculation of the skewness for each m-by-m-by-m sliding block of the SPECT brain images. The center pixel in this m-by-m-by-m block is replaced by the skewness value to build a new 3-D brain image which is used for classification purposes. After that, voxels which present a Welch's t-statistic between classes, Normal and Alzheimer's images, higher (or lower) than a threshold are selected. The mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis are calculated for these selected voxels and they are subjected as features to linear kernel based support vector machine classifier. The proposed methodology reaches accuracy higher than 99% in the classification task.

Background: The behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a challenging diagnosis due to overlapping symptoms with psychiatric and other neurological conditions. Accordingly, misdiagnosis is common. The present study aimed to identify clinical factors contributing to misdiagnoses of bvFTD by specialist physicians.

Background And Purpose: This study aims to investigate the longitudinal changes in translocator protein (TSPO) following stroke in different brain regions and potential associations with chronic brain infarction.

Methods: Twelve patients underwent SPECT using the TSPO tracer 6-Chloro-2-(4'-123I-Iodophenyl)-3-(N,N-Diethyl)-Imidazo[1,2-a]Pyridine-3-Acetamide, as well as structural MRI, at 10, 41, and 128 days (median) after ischemic infarction in the middle cerebral artery. TSPO expression was measured in lesional (MRI lesion and SPECT lesion), connected (pons and ipsilesional thalamus), and nonconnected (ipsilesional cerebellum and contralesional occipital cortex) regions.

False-Positive Uptake of 123I-MIBG in the Basal Ganglion in a Pediatric Neuroblastoma Patient.

Clin Nucl Med

January 2025

From the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

A 7-year-old boy with high-risk neuroblastoma underwent 123I-MIBG SPECT/CT to evaluate the therapy response. The scan revealed abnormal 123I-MIBG uptake in the left basal ganglion, indicating the possibility of brain metastasis. Subsequent contrast-enhanced brain MRI, however, did not show any abnormal signal intensity in the left basal ganglion.

Nuclear Medicine Imaging in Epilepsy.

Radiographics

From the Department of Radiology, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, 3188 Bellevue Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45219 (A.S., A.T.T., B.W.M., L.L.W., J.L.S.); and Department of Radiology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH (A.T.T.).

Approximately one-third of patients with focal epilepsy have medically refractory focal epilepsy (MRFE), which significantly impacts their quality of life. Once a seizure focus is identified and determined to be in the noneloquent cortex, it can be surgically resected with the goal of freedom from seizures and minimal neurocognitive deficit. During noninvasive (phase I) presurgical planning, functional (nuclear) imaging and structural imaging are complementary in the accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ).

Objectives: Brain perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) image quality varies depending on SPECT systems. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between physical parameters and visual analysis for assessment of the brain SPECT image quality. We conducted our phantom study under various conditions in a multi-center and multi-vendor study.
