We present the novel use of microstructured optical fibers not as "light-pipes", but in a transverse geometry to manipulate the light propagating across the fiber. Fundamental and higher-order bandgaps were observed experimentally in this geometry using a number of techniques. The comparison of the measured spectra with photonic band structure and Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulations provide strong evidence that the spectral features are a result of the periodic nature of the fiber microstructure in the transverse direction.

Two-Step Image Registration for Dual-Layer Flat-Panel Detectors.

Diagnostics (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Electronics Engineering, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Gyeonggi-do, Yongin-si 17035, Republic of Korea.

Background: For a single exposure in radiography, a dual-layer flat-panel detector (DFD) can provide spectral images and efficiently utilize the transmitted X-ray photons to improve the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) performance. In this paper, to acquire high DQE performance, we present a registration method for X-ray images acquired from a DFD, considering only spatial translations and scale factors. The conventional registration methods have inconsistent estimate accuracies depending on the captured object scene, even when using entire pixels, and have deteriorated frequency performance because of the interpolation method employed.

Superchiral Light Emerging from Bound States in the Continuum in Metasurfaces of Si Nanorod Dimers.

ACS Photonics

Instituto de Estructura de la Materia (IEM), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Serrano 121, 28006 Madrid, Spain.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) in all-dielectric metasurfaces enhance light-matter interaction at the nanoscale due to their infinite factors and strong field confinement. Among a variety of phenomena already reported, their impact on chiral light has recently attracted great interest. Here we investigate the emergence of intrinsic and extrinsic optical chirality associated with the excitation of BICs in various metasurfaces made of Si nanorod dimers on a quartz substrate, comparing three cases: parallel nanorods (neutral) and shifted and slanted dimers, with/without index-matching superstrate.

Near-Ideal Copper Oxide Heterostructure Design for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2024

School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Pusan National University, 2, Busandaehak-ro 63 beon-gil, Geumjeong-gu, Busan 46241, Republic of Korea.

In recent years, photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation through water splitting has gained significant attention as a carbon-free solar-to-energy conversion strategy. Among various materials, copper oxides, specifically cupric oxide (CuO) and cuprous oxide (CuO), have been extensively investigated for their suitable band positions and prominent performance, particularly in heterostructures. However, previously reported heterostructures, such as CuO layers on CuO, are not ideal configurations in terms of photoelectrical properties.

What we believe to be a new type of transparent photon sieve is presented with application for presbyopia correction. Inspired by blazed gratings, we propose to design an intracorneal implant with slanted holes. The slopes introduce a new degree of freedom, breaking the symmetry of energy distribution along the optical axis and allowing to balance the energy between near and far vision.

An axially slanted illumination back-scattering Raman scheme for direct determination of component concentration of powder samples housed in a glass container.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

March 2024

Department of Chemistry and Research Institute for Convergence of Basic Science, Hanyang University, Seoul 04763, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

For direct and non-sampling determination of the component concentration of a sample housed in a glass container, an axially slanted illumination (ASI) back-scattering Raman scheme that reduces glass background interference has been demonstrated. The strategy was to increase the distance between the spots illuminated by the laser on the glass container and the housed sample in back-scattering measurement. For realization, the laser initially illuminated at a slant through the upper side of the vial wall (sample-unoccupied space) and reach the top of the sample.
