Published: June 2009

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy (TR3) has been used to study the effect of solvent polarity on the mechanism and nature of intermediates formed in photoinduced electron-transfer reaction between triplet flouranil ((3)FL) and tetramethylbenzene (TMB). Comparison of the TR3 spectra in polar, nonpolar, and medium polar media suggests that formation of radical anion due to electron-transfer reaction between (3)FL and TMB is favored in more polar solvents, whereas ketyl radical formation is more favored in less polar media. Compared to ketyl radical, the extent of radical anion formation is negligible in nonpolar solvents. Therefore, it is inferred that in nonpolar media ketyl radical is mainly generated by hydrogen-transfer reaction in the encounter complex between (3)FL and TMB. In solvents of medium polarity, the ion-pair decay leads to the formation of both ketyl radical and ketyl radical formed from the encounter between triplet state and the donor. Thus, competition between the formation of ketyl radical and ion pair is influenced by the solvent polarity. The nature of the ion pair in different solvent polarity has been investigated from the changes observed in the vibrational frequency of (fluoranil) FL part of the complex.

Light-Driven Stepwise Reduction of Aliphatic Carboxylic Esters to Aldehydes and Alcohols.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Yunnan University, Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry for Natural Resources, Ministry of Education, East Outer Ring Road, 650500, Kunming, CHINA.

The reduction of carboxylic esters to aldehydes and alcohols is a fundamental functional group transformation in chemistry. However, the inertness of carbonyl group and the instability of ketyl radical anion intermediate impede the reduction of carboxylic esters via photochemical strategy. Herein, we described the reduction of aliphatic carboxylic esters with synergistic dual photocatalysis via phenolate-catalyzed single electron transfer process and thiol-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer process.

A photoacid-catalyzed method for esterification is proposed wherein eosin Y is introduced as a photoacid and photoredox catalyst that can be activated with visible light and catalyze the esterification of carboxylic acids. The strategy presented here revealed that proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) between eosin Y and carboxylic acid might facilitate the formation of a transient ketyl radical. This ketyl radical would subsequently undergo a single electron transfer and then couple with alkyl alcohols, yielding carboxylic esters in good to excellent yields.

Probing the Photochemical Formation of Hydroxyl Radical from Dissolved Organic Matter: Insights into the HO-Dependent Pathway.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Zachry Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843, United States.

This study quantifies the contribution of the HO-dependent pathway to hydroxyl radical (OH) production from the photolysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM). OH formation rates were cross-validated using benzoate and terephthalate as probe compounds for diverse DOM sources (reference isolates and whole waters). Catalase addition revealed that the HO-dependent pathway accounts for 10-20% of the total OH production in DOM isolate materials, but no significant correlation was observed between ambient iron (Fe) concentrations and HO-dependent OH formation.

State Key Laboratory of Bioactive Molecules and Druggability Assessment, Guangdong Basic Research Center of Excellence for Natural Bioactive Molecules and Discovery of Innovative Drugs, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510632, P. R. China ".

Highly functionalized xanthenes possess an impressive range of bioactivities and daunting synthetic challenge due to their unique ring systems and stereocenters. Here, we report an unprecedented ketyl radicals-induced skeletal rearrangement reaction of spirodihydrobenzofurans, enabled by zero-valent iron as reducing agents via photoredox catalysis, facilitating the facile preparation of various highly functionalized xanthenes. The features of this protocol include high chemo- and regioselectivity, exceptionally mild conditions, a broad substrate scope, scalability to gram-scale quantities, and consistent delivery of good to excellent yields.
