We use analytic expressions and simulations to examine a model laser gain element formed by integrating diamond and a solid state laser material, such as, Ti:sapphire. The gain element is designed to provide in a single composite structure the thermal management capabilities of diamond and the optical amplification of the laser material. The model results indicate low temperature and a specific radial dependence of the heat transfer coefficient at the material interfaces are needed to access the highest average powers and highest quality optical fields. We outline paths designed to increase average output power of a lowest order mode laser oscillator based on these gain elements to megawatt levels. The long term goal is economically viable solar power delivered safely from space. The short term goal is a design strategy that will facilitate "proof of principle" demonstrations using currently accessible optical pump and thermal management capabilities.

Reliable computational methodologies and basis sets for modeling x-ray spectra are essential for extracting and interpreting electronic and structural information from experimental x-ray spectra. In particular, the trade-off between numerical accuracy and computational cost due to the size of the basis set is a major challenge, since molecular orbitals undergo extreme relaxation in the core-hole state. To gain clarity on the changes in electronic structure induced by the formation of a core-hole, the use of sufficiently flexible basis for expanding the orbitals, particularly for the core region, has been shown to be essential.

In this paper, a multilayer monopulse antenna at Ku-Band with high efficiency, high power handling capability, high gain, 45° linear polarization and low sidelobe is presented. A new slot antenna is proposed as a radiating element based on a cavity-backed slot-coupled patch antenna. Using an enclosed cavity structure reduces coupling between antenna elements, thus increasing the antenna efficiency.

Educational Strategies for Teaching Metabolic Profiles Across Three Endurance Training Zones.

Adv Physiol Educ

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Tissue Biology, Institute of Biology, State University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil.

This article explores an innovative educational approach using a metabolic board designed to enhance understanding of muscle metabolism across three endurance training zones: Z1 (light intensity), Z2 (moderate intensity), and Z3 (intense/severe intensity). The aerobic threshold marks the transition from light to moderate domains, and the anaerobic threshold separates moderate from intense domains, with both thresholds adapting to training. Exercises within each training zone elicit specific adaptive responses through distinct signaling pathways, but the metabolic profile induced remains relatively constant across these intensity domains.
