Objective: The purpose of this series is to report 3 cases of follicular thyroid carcinoma with an eggshell calcification along with their imaging findings.

Methods: Imaging findings on gray scale and power Doppler (PD) sonography (n = 3), computed tomography (CT; n = 3), and integrated fluorodeoxyglucose F 18 ((18)F-FDG) whole-body positron emission tomography (PET)/CT (n = 1) were assessed.

Results: Of the 3 cases, two 75-year-old women had bone metastasis, and one 54-year-old woman had a thyroid incidentaloma on sonography. All 3 cases had a spherical mass with an interrupted eggshell calcification on gray scale sonography and CT; 2 revealed intranodular vascularity on PD sonography, and 1 showed intense hypermetabolism (maximum standardized uptake value, 7.9 g/mL) on integrated (18)F-FDG whole-body PET/CT.

Conclusions: Follicular carcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a thyroid nodule with an eggshell calcification.

Improving eggshell quality in poultry is a key breeding goal, and identifying genetic markers that regulate eggshell calcification is essential for accelerating genetic advancements. This study focused on identifying the keys genes and molecular mechanisms that regulate eggshell calcification in the chicken uterus. The results showed that rapid eggshell mineralization began approximately 4 h after the egg enters the uterus, corresponding with observed morphological and histological changes in the uterine tissue.

Objective: Calcification in pituitary adenomas is a rare occurrence and its differential diagnosis typically includes other sellar masses. Common calcifications in pituitary adenomas are classified into 2 morphological forms: capsular (eggshell-like) and multiple small nodular calcifications located within the adenoma. Also, there is a pituitary stone term.

Purpose: The aim of our study was to investigate the technical accuracy of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) created to detect intramammary-like calcifications depending on different TEs, volume, and type of calcification samples at 1.5T.

Methods: Jello-embedded particles of blackboard chalk and ostrich eggshell ranging in size from 4 to 25 mm were used to simulate intramammary calcifications after testing different base substances and calcifications for their suitability to be used in breast phantoms.

Article Synopsis
  • Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is a common thyroid cancer that's tricky to tell apart from follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA), especially using preoperative ultrasound.
  • This study looked at 96 patients with FTC or FTA to determine which ultrasound features are most indicative of FTC.
  • Key findings show that characteristics like mixed vascularization and central stellate scarring are significant indicators of FTC, improving diagnostic accuracy when combined with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess thyroid nodules using sonoelastography and MRI, involving 28 patients with 40 nodules while excluding certain conditions and past surgeries.
  • Results indicated a strong correlation between Rago scores and malignant nodules, with a specific mean strain ratio cutoff predicting 100% specificity for malignancy.
  • The conclusion highlighted that sonoelastography is an effective noninvasive technique for predicting outcomes, whereas MRI serves better as a supplementary problem-solving tool rather than a primary imaging method.
