Quasi-phase matched second-harmonic generation at 532 nm is demonstrated in a channel waveguide that is written in bulk fused silica using a femtosecond laser. The second-order nonlinear grating is fabricated using uniform thermal poling followed by periodic erasure inside an e-beam deposition system caused, by what we believe to be, x-rays. A SHG conversion efficiency of 2 x10(-5) %/W-cm(2) was obtained for a 1 cm long device, corresponding to an effective nonlinear coefficient of 0.0075 pm/V.

A high-speed entanglement assisted communication that operates at 10 Gb/s is proposed, which performs a highly efficient, PPLN-waveguide-based, entanglement generation by making the simultaneous use of S- and L-band pumps. The two-pump-based entanglement generation source satisfies the quasi-phase-matching-condition over the entire C-band. To improve the system reliability, our system performs the phase-conjugation on idler photons in contrast to conventional ways of performing the phase-conjugation on signal photons.

Lithium niobate on insulator - fundamental opto-electronic properties and photonic device prospects.

Nanophotonics

July 2024

State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, School of Physics and Electronic Science, East China Normal University, Shanghai 200241, China.

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) combines a variety of optoelectronic properties and can meet practical performance requirements that are uncommon in optoelectronic materials. This review introduces the fundamentals and the photonic device concepts that arise from the LNOI materials platform. Firstly, the nonlinear optical response of LNOI is presented, including birefringent phase matching (BPM), modal phase matching (MPM), and quasi-phase matching (QPM).

The concept of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has not only advanced fundamental physics research but also yielded a plethora of practical applications, benefitting from the abundant methods for OAM generation based on linear, nonlinear and combined schemes. The combined scheme could generate octave-separating OAM beams, potentially increasing the channels for optical communication and data storage. However, this scheme faces a challenge in achieving high conversion efficiency.

We present an approach to generate stable vortex solitons (VSs) in rotating quasi-phase-matched photonic crystals with quadratic nonlinearity. The photonic crystal is introduced with a checkerboard structure, which can be realized using available technology. The VSs are constructed as four-peak vortex modes of two types: rhombuses and squares.
