A theoretical model and its experimental realization for the temperature grating relaxation time constant and its impact on the temporal and the spectral profiles of a Q-switched and modelocked Nd:YAG laser pumped distributed feedback dye laser (DFDL) is reported. Boundary conditions for different types of excitation pulses have been established to predict the effect of temperature phase gratings on laser gain build-up and temporal elongation of the DFDL pulses. The proposed transient grating method is useful in measuring grating relaxation time constants for lasing dye solutions. The proposed mathematical model is demonstrated by measurement of the relaxation time constant of R6G in ethanol at 10-3M. The measured relaxation time constant of 16+/-0.2 ns is very close to the tabulated values determined using other techniques.

What little we know about how microbiomes change over the course of host dispersal has been gleaned from simulations or snapshot sampling of microbiomes of hosts undertaking regular, cyclical migrations. These studies suggest that major changes in both microbiome richness and turnover occur in response to long-distance movements, but we do not yet know how rare or sporadic dispersal events for non-migratory organisms might affect the microbiomes of their hosts. Here we directly examine the microbiomes of rafting seaweed, leveraging host genomic analyses, amplicon sequencing, and oceanographic modelling to study the impacts of ecological dispersal of hosts on their microbiomes.

[Pt(NCN)MeCN] (NCN = 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene, MeCN = acetonitrile) forms oligomers in the ground state due to metallophilic interactions, and a Pt-Pt bond is formed with photoexcitation. Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the [Pt(NCN)MeCN] dimer in acetonitrile is investigated by femtosecond time-resolved absorption (TA) and picosecond emission spectroscopy. The femtosecond TA signals exhibit 60 cm oscillations arising from the Pt-Pt stretching motion in the S dimer.
