Fertil Steril

Assisted Reproduction Unit, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, 3 East Qingchun Road, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Published: July 2009

Objective: To present two successful pregnancy results following cervical cerclage before blastocyst transfer in patients who had cryopreserved ET and in whom cervical insufficiency was diagnosed.

Design: Case report.

Setting: Assisted reproduction unit in a university hospital.

Patient(s): Two patients with infertility and cervical insufficiency. Both patients signed informed consent.

Intervention(s): Cervical cerclage before blastocyst transfer.

Main Outcome Measure(s): Pregnancy and birth.

Result(s): Both women achieved pregnancy after transfer of a single, high-quality blastocyst and gave birth to a healthy infant.

Conclusion(s): Cervical cerclage can be performed before blastocyst transfer in patients with cervical insufficiency who undergo cryopreserved ET. The procedure is especially relevant to patients in whom the cervical os is dilated and the distal cervical segment is short. Transfer of a single, high-quality blastocyst can result in pregnancy and birth.

According to the Hospital's Protocol, all patients received a vaginal and abdominal ultrasound, a maternal blood test, and an amniocentesis of the first sac to rule out IAI, defined by IL-6 ≥ 2.

Patients with a transabdominal cerclage due to recurrent mid-trimester losses are not at higher risk of foetal growth restriction: a retrospective study.

J Obstet Gynaecol

December 2025

Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Experimental Medicine Research Group, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.

Foetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with neonatal morbidity, suboptimal neurodevelopmental outcomes and chronic diseases. Successful pregnancies of women with recurrent mid-trimester pregnancy losses may still be at risk of FGR and small for gestational age (SGA) outcomes. This study aimed to investigate whether patients with recurrent mid-trimester pregnancy losses who undergo transabdominal cerclage (TAC) are at an increased risk of FGR.

Mechanical analysis of cerclage as a treatment for cervical insufficiency.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ulsan University Hospital, University of Ulsan, College of Medicine, 25 Daehakbyeongwon-ro, Dong-gu, Ulsan, 44033, South Korea.

Background: The primary treatment for cervical insufficiency is cervical cerclage (mechanical support) with vaginal progesterone (biochemical support). Cerclage is a surgical procedure that mechanically increases the tensile capacity of the cervix. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the effects of cerclage from a mechanical point of view.
